NASHVILLE – Titans coach Brian Callahan held a press conference on Monday, one day after the team's 41-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Next up is a road game at the Houston Texans.
Here's a look at some of the hot topics from today's presser:
-Callahan said the Titans are "evaluating everything that we're doing right now" to see if it can help the team improve, and ultimately win football games. "We have to do a lot of things better," Callahan said. "Everybody is included in that, me as well."
-Callahan was asked in several ways about the decision to kick a field goal at the end of the half, and the delay of game penalty that preceded it. "The decision is what it was, and I addressed it after the game," Callahan said when asked who is involved in the conversation. "We made the decision that we made, and it was my decision to make."
-Callahan was asked if he'd consider relinquishing his play-calling duties moving forward. "Everything is under evaluation right now at 0-3, certainly it's all part of it," Callahan said. "That's players in their roles, that's everything. We've got to find a way to put ourselves in position to win games. We're evaluating everything."
-Callahan said the players played hard, and fought in the game, "we just didn't play well enough" to win it when asked about the team's readiness, and effort.
-Callahan said receiver Calvin Ridley has worked extremely hard during the practice week when asked about his slow start, which included him making just one catch on Sunday despite being targeted seven times. "There's nobody that works harder than Calvin, there's nobody that puts forth more effort into it," Callahan said. "What he's put into it, to have the performance he's had through three games, I'm sure it's incredibly frustrating for him, as it is for our team. We need better from him, and he knows that too. It's just hard when a guy puts that kind of work into it, and doesn't get the performance as a result on Sundays."
-Callahan said the team will continue to evaluate players at inside linebacker following a game when James Williams Sr. was among the game's inactives, and Kyzir White played in place of Cedric Gray at times on Sunday. "We just wanted to see what Kyzir could bring to help us, against a team that was going to run the ball quite a bit," Callahan said. "Kyzir has played a lot of football."
-Callahan was asked about areas on the team that have shown growth. He said quarterback Cam Ward has improved every week while also naming rookie receivers Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike. "There have been some good things offensively," Callahan said. "We just need more of it through the course of a game." Callahan said running back Tony Pollard has been playing hard. "There's still plenty of good things on our football team," Callahan said. "The losing games is what magnifies the negative things. … But I really don't think we are that far away as a football team from winning games."
-Callahan said right guard Blake Hance and right tackles John Ojukwu and Oli Udoh both held up while playing in place of injured starters against the Colts. "I was really pleased with Blake's performance," Callahan said. "He stepped in and played admirably. … Both tackles did some good things. I thought those guys stepped in and played well during the course of the game."
-Callahan said there's a chance the team could get Kevin Zeitler and JC Latham back soon, potentially for the team's Week 4 game against the Texans. "There's a shot," Callahan said. "We'll have to wait and see on Zeitler over the practice week, and JC will be the same way. There is certainly potential"
-Callahan was asked about the booing from fans, and his message to them: "I think they have every right to be frustrated," Callahan said. "Trust me, there is nobody that's any more frustrated than I am, where we're at. I understand it. We haven't won enough games, and that's the reaction you get when you haven't won enough games. But I very much believe in our ability as a coaching staff, and I believe in our players. I believe in what we do and how we do it. I believe in myself, and I believe in our players. We're going to have to play a better brand of football, and we have to get some things fixed and corrected, and we will. We're working like crazy to get it fixed and we'll do whatever is necessary to get there."
