Weekend Mailbag: Jim Wyatt Answers Questions From Titans Fans Ahead of Sunday's Game vs the Chargers

mailbag-ask-jim

NASHVILLE – And we're into November.

In some ways, it seems like this season if flying by. In others, it feels like it should be late December.

Nonetheless, the Titans still have nine games in this season, plus the bye week.

Next up: The Los Angeles Chargers, on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.

Until then, let's discuss the state of things and more in this weekend's mailbag…

Omar Parker from Bay Area, California
Question: Haven't written much this year and obviously there has been little positive to mention (Remember when we were just happy to have football back? Those were the days!) But I need to comment on the fans calling for us to revisit Levis as the qb. I never liked Levis out of college, was not happy we drafted him and it turned out about how I feared. This year, I didn't want the team to draft Cam at first, but came around the more film I watched and info I read on him. Since being drafted he has displayed the potential to be a great qb. Has he made mistakes? Yes, but he has improved and shown flashes. With Levis we had, what a year and a half of futility? We're 8 games in and some already want Cam out. Levis had part of a year with Henry, a better version of Pollard, more time with Ridley and he showed he was not the answer. Give Cam some other weapons with the rookies and some new coaching and let's see what we have. Are weapons important? Look at Pittsburgh for example. They have HOF qb, way better defense and DK Metcalf, but they're still in the receiver market in order to improve the team. In fact there are several teams who are looking for receiver help who already have a talented receiver, because you need more than one weapon. Now look at the Titans and their roster with a rookie qb. Those are a whole lotta words to say this team is missing so much, have some grace with Cam. And buckle up for a lengthy rebuild. Thanks for the time Jim.

Jim: Hey Omar. It has been a while. Thanks for taking the time. It does make it more difficult to evaluate a QB when the team is not very good around him. Levis had to deal with that, and Cam is going through it now. I do agree Levis had more talent around him in 2023. I think Cam has proven he has ability, and his makeup is good. He's a leader, and he's obsessed with winning. I agree folks should be more patient with him.

Gerardo Villarreal from Monterey, Mexico
Question: Hey Jim, hope you're doing well! I wanted to send a big hello. I had the pleasure of meeting you last year in Houston, and it was great to catch up near the field. I know the Titans have had a tough season with some tough coaching, administrative, and player decisions, but one thing that feels like it hasn't gotten enough attention is just how brutal the NFL schedule has been for the Titans this year. They've faced division leaders like the Patriots, the Colts twice, and the Broncos. Also the Rams would be in the playoffs, and to top it off, they've had three straight road games, including a tough one in Houston, which can be a challenge for anyone. Next game against the Chargers - that one's never easy. I saw somewhere that the Titans' schedule was ranked as the 3rd toughest in 2025, and I just wanted to mention that despite all the struggles, it's also not helping that the schedule has been incredibly tough. By the way, I'm a die-hard Titans fan since 1991 from Monterrey, Mexico, can vouch for my fandom through my Instagram account, @titanscapcollection where I showcase my collection of Titans caps. Hope to hear from you, and here's hoping things turn around for the Titans!

Jim: Well, hello Gerardo. You're right, it's been a tough road. The team did get one of the get-able games in Arizona, with some good fortune, but that loss to the Raiders was a real clunker. When I look at some games on the upcoming schedule, the Titans will have some chances, but the team is going to have to play a lot better. Have a great weekend.

Robert Beck from Nashville, Tennessee
Question: I sincerely appreciate all of your work with the Titans organization through the years. I've been following you in Nashville since you worked the local high school teams scene. We're all frustrated beyond belief about the current state of the Titans. For me, for the most part it gets down to decisions from ownership (yes, Amy!). AJ Brown, Derrick Henry, Mike Vrabel leaving the scene, not giving support to young QBs Levis & now Ward (still could have signed Tannehill for league minimum imo) & Steve Underwood retiring in May 2020. There was an article in atozsports.com about the Brian Callahan redundancy & speaking of Amy's poor reputation for 'impatience' ect...... Is there any truth to the possibility that the decision was made (by her?) at noon on 10/13/2025 & then an official conference call made at 7 or 7:30 pm? Why the delay? Did Borgonzi & Brinker really make the call, or was it just dog & pony show? No apologies for my cynicism btw, as politics in the NFL is very real. I think that you're remunerated by the Titans, however, are you permitted to criticize ownership's decision making about personnel and still remain employed? I understand these are 'hard' questions Jim, but I love our team believe it or not & want the very best for them, as I still remember dining with Steve Underwood et al the night before the Chiefs game in January 2020. Here's to better days ahead! Titan up!

Jim: Hey Robert. Those were the days – I loved covering high school sports. The situation the team is in right now, I think everyone deserves some blame. I'm never going to speak for the owner, but I feel pretty comfortable saying she's disappointed with how some things played out. She wants to win – it's why she's made the decision to fire some of these coaches and GMs in an effort to do so. The problem is the wrong folks were hired to replace them, and things have spiraled downward. I feel like this is old news by now, but since you brought it up, I can tell you the decision to fire Callahan was not an emotional, spur-of-the-moment move. Everyone wanted to give Callahan a chance to succeed – it's why he was given a second year. But it became very clear it wasn't working, and wasn't going to work. So, the decision was made to move on. There were a number of factors in why the press conference was delayed until that evening, but it wasn't because the team didn't have a plan for the interim head coach. I said this before: It was always going to be Mike McCoy, I can promise you that. It's up to the front office to get it right with the next hire at head coach in January.

Eric Biederman from Franklin, Tennessee
Question: Hey Jim, here are a few rapid-fire statements/questions.
-Is this the worst Titans team in recent memory? I've been watching since 2016 or so, and never have I seen a team look so consistently pathetic.
-Are we permanently stunting Cam Ward's development? I know plenty of quarterbacks with awful early seasons have turned into studs, but it's not just a team performance; it's a lack of competent coaching, management, and ownership that have put us in this position.
-In my opinion, many Titans decisions were awful at the time they were made, and not just in retrospect. Firing Mike Vrabel and trading AJ Brown come to mind. To what extent would you agree?
-Peter Skoronski is developing very well and will turn into a franchise o-lineman, but JC Latham is not on that path yet. Hopefully he will get the memo soon. Thanks

Jim: Hey Eric. I'll respond in rapid-fire fashion:
-It's the worst team since you've been watching. The 2014 squad was really bad, too.
-No, I think Ward has gotten better, even with the issues surrounding him.
-It's easy to look back now and say firing Mike Vrabel was a bad idea. But people forget how bad things were at the end of his tenure. … Trading away A.J. Brown was a terrible decision.
-Skoronski has proven to be a really solid pick. And he's the kind of player the team should try to extend. JC Latham hasn't been elite, but he still has time to develop into a really good player. He's just 22.

Adam Moose from Traverse City, Michigan
Question: Hey Jim, I've been a diehard titans fan for the past 25 years. My question is: What is it going to take to bring an identity back to this football team. With the firing of Robinson, then vrabel, then carthon, now Callahan. It seems that from the top down there is no real plan in place to get this franchise back on its feet. Trading away brownlee and mcreary, two young starting CB's for day 3 draft picks, while having sneed who most likely won't be on the team next year. At least in years past when the titans were bad, we had CJ2K to have some excitement. Now the only thing I can think of is we have a good rookie class that hopefully will grow into a solid foundation to build around. With the front office saying we will draft and develop players, then trading away two young starters on defense who were drafted here (by other GMs but still), it seems the titans may not be in a place to be competitive again, until it's time to pay cam ward. At this point all a Titans fan can do is cross our fingers and hope they hire the right coach, and that cam wars develops into a solid starter. If the front office messes up the coaching hire. Titans will be bottom dwellers for another 4 years. Please give me some kind of hope for next season and the direction of the franchise! Thanks for your time Jim.

Jim: Oh this team has an identity right now, it's just not a good one. The best way to restore a positive image, and credibility, is to build a better team, and win. I've said before: I wasn't a fan of the Brownlee trade, in large part because I always liked Brownlee (clearly more than others in the building). I 100 percent understood the McCreary trade, not because I don't like Roger, but because his contract was expiring and the trade made sense to me. Get what you can get for a guy who wasn't going to be on the team next year. Let's keep in real: It's not like it's going to cost the team a playoff spot this year. The reality is this franchise is in a complete rebuild right now, and drafting well is the best way to fix that. The team helped itself in the 2026 draft with that trade, even if it hurt itself on the field this fall in the process. Keep your fingers crossed about hiring the right head coach, because, yeah, that's going to be a big part of changing the fortunes as well.

Eli Decko from Youngwood, Pennsylvania
Question: Does this team have a clue? Trade away a really solid corner who was a second round pick, and a sixth for a 5th???? McCreary was a really good player. All this hype of building around Cam Ward is so ridiculous, the dude is bad. Like every time he throws the ball I cringe anticipating a turnover. So what are they gonna do with a 5th round pick to help the team? Reach for a lineman? I mean come on. Roger is gonna go to LA and shine. Like most of our guys do on other teams. Why not trade Snead for a 5th? Thats about all he is worth. Sure he is injured, like always, but his performance and coverage was nowhere near that of Roger. JT ran wild once again, looking like LT out there. No knock on Taylor at all he is a great back. The Titans are clueless, frantic and rebuilding is an understatement. They should have stuck with Vrabel and roughed the storm. He didn't do anything to deserve getting fired except for laying Ran Carthon out in a preseason game 15 years ago. Now they start all over AGAIN, meanwhile in. VRABEL'S first year in New England he is DOMINATING the AFC East and really making us REAL Titans fans sick to our stomach. This team needs to do something HUGE if they plan on filling that stadium. Cam Ward isn't gonna do it and we all love Jeffrey Simmons, but how many Defensive Tackles fill seats? In my time I can think of Aaron Donald and Warren Sapp. What are your thoughts Jim? This team didn't remotely look competitive Sunday. Cam looked BAD and the Titans once again were embarrassed on the field.

Jim: I know the team has given you a lot of ammo to sound off, Eli. I'm not going to counter you on all your negativity, because I don't have enough time in my day. I'll just explain the McCreary trade one more time, and will then move on. McCreary was not coming back in 2026 – his contract was up. The Titans didn't have a fifth-round pick. Before the trade, the Titans were scheduled to pick in the fourth round (which is going to be at the top) and the team wouldn't have had another pick until the sixth round. So, we're talking about a gap of 70-75 picks in the 2026 draft. So, the team traded what was their last of three picks in the sixth round to get to the top of the fifth (their old pick, sent to the Rams earlier, so it's going to be high in the fifth). Now the team will be in play in the fifth, and with more ammo for potential trades. I get it wasn't a sexy trade, but if you've paid attention, you've seen other teams make pick swaps recently as well. It's the market. In April, long after this forgettable Titans season is over, most folks will appreciate the team having an upgraded pick.

Question: I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm really enjoying (Of course, doing so I have to ignore the game result.) Our youngsters play (Elic Ayomanor, Chimene Dike, Gunnar Helm, Cam Ward and hopefully soon Xavier Restpro),
but on the other hand, only a few of my heroes from the past (Roger McCreary, Kevin Byard, Azeez Al-Shaair, Jonnu Smith, Kalif Raymond, AJ Brown, the King ...) are still around.
When are we going to sell Arden Key, Amani Hooker, and Big Jeff for a song? tabula rasa

Jim: I just learned what tabula rasa means!

Jefferson Pendergrass from Rainsville, Alabama
Question: Hi Jim. It is my opinion that the Titans and Tyjae Spears would both be better-served if they moved Tyjae to a wide receiver (WR) position. On the Titans website,Tyjae is listed at 5'11" and 195 pounds. 195 pounds is considered undersized for a college running back, let alone a NFL running back. Tyjae appears to have elite lateral-quickness, excellent top-end speed and overall explosiveness. Additionally, he is a very good pass-catcher out of the backfield. Yet he seems to struggle when trying to run the ball between the tackles and out of the backfield in general. A change to WR would also significantly extend his career in the NFL.
What is your opinion or insight on this? Is there something I am missing? Thank You.

Jim: I think Tyjae Spears is a running back, and will remain a running back.

Cesar Aguirre from Dallas, Texas
Question: Hello there jim. Is Cam Ward not allowed to run with the ball when under pressure? I'll be honest I don't think I've seen him all season get one first down running the ball? Quarterbacks also have to make plays scrambling. Maybe it's time to sit him and let him learn? I'm not saying he's a bust, however, I thought trading the number 1 pick for two first rounds was better. Let him be calm and nonchalant on the sideline. I'm tired of seeing a team that is basing the whole season on a young quarterback. We did it last year and again this year. I went to the patriots-titans game just to see if Vrabel would spank the goal posts after they ran it down our throats the titan smash-mouth way. But I guess not. Too much class. Nevertheless, I had a great time. what a great city and a beautiful state. After the whole week in Tennessee I intentionally missed the Colts game. It's now clearly obvious that the dismissal of Jon Robinson was the beginning of the downfall and turned out to be the worst decision. From one of the best teams in the AFC to the worst in 2 years. Who made that stupid call?

Jim: Cam calm and nonchalant? That's not him. Glad you enjoyed Nashville! It's a great city, my hometown. Smart move on missing the Colts game – you didn't miss anything.

Drew Flynn from Nashville, Tennessee
Question: Hey man. Tough way to start the season for the titans. I am a huge fan of the titans, and I was wondering what the front office thinks of this record. I feel like the titans are a good team, but I feel like we got to own it up for all 4 quarters of a game. I feel like what coach Mcoy has done so far is good. Obviously, the 4th down was critical, and Coach said he wish had back. What is it from the view of the front office and coaching staff. From Cam Ward to Big Jeff, I feel like the roster is good, but I feel like we need a little more than what we have. Also, what good does it make when your trading people like Roger McCreary to the rams for a pick in the draft. I feel like we just gave up a big man on our defense. I think same think with Kenneth Murry Jr. We trade him away for draft picks but not to mention that he was a great help for our defense. What is the state of those Trades. Are we saving up for additional draft picks or are we just restarting for next year?

Jim: The front office hates this record. But let's be honest: It could be worse. This team is fortunate it's not 0-8, that's just the truth.

George Steiner from Jackson, Mississippi
Question: Hey Jim, me again. Nothing profound to say this time. I just want to say on behalf of all Titans fans: We are tired of this. Your job isn't very fun right now with how bad this team is and the fans aren't happy either. We will make it together though. Safe to say you are my favorite Titans staff member lol.

Jim: Thank you, George! And be thankful I am not playing!

Have a great weekend everyone!
