Tuesday Mailbag: Jim Wyatt Answers Questions From Titans Fans

mailtate

NASHVILLE – Welcome to June.

And, to the latest edition of the Titans mailbag.

It's a quieter week in Titan land, with no OTAs this week.

Players and coaches will be back on the field the following two weeks for another round of OTAs, and a minicamp.

Here's this Tuesday's mailbag…

Frank Galovic from Bradyville, Tennessee
Question: You continue to do a good job on keeping us fans updated. Thanks. I am guessing I am glad that the Titans did not draft Love at the 4th pick. Not because he is not a fantastic player, he is. It is just that I feel great runners don't make good teams great. I think great teams make really good rb's great. Two examples, Derrick Henry and Tony Pollard. Derrick Henry was second in yards gained last season yet the Ravens didn't make the playoffs. Pollard gained over a thousand yards and the Titans only won three games. To me, great runners put great teams over the top. Saquan Barkley was the final piece to make the Eagles Super Bowl champions.
I like how the Titans instead added pieces to help Cam Ward and improve other positions on the team to raise the overall quality of the players. They just didn't spend a lot of money on "stars" in free agency. Overall, I would rate the Titan draft as solid and free agent spending as wise use of cap space.
Here's hoping Saleh is what the Titan's need.

Jim: Appreciate it, Frank. It's been a busy offseason. Time will tell with Love, and Carnell Tate, the guy the Titans ended up drafting. I like Jeremiyah Love, and I think he's going to be really good. But the Tate pick also gave the team, and quarterback Cam Ward, a weapon for years to come. And, he's off to a great start in OTAs. I think a lot of folks have come around on the selection, and I suspect even more will in time. But Love, Tate, and all these guys are going to need to prove it, and they're going to need to stay healthy. Pollard has been such a good pro because he's been durable, productive, consistent, and available. I wrote about him on Monday. To read that story, CLICK HERE. This fall you're going to see a Titans team with more weapons than it's had in a while, and I know a lot of fans had been clamoring for more days like these.

Question: Observations on Cam Ward from last year: 1) He has a big arm 2) He plays off schedule way too much, needs to play on schedule more 3) His passing accuracy is not great. I did not come away from last year's effort feeling like he has nailed down the QB of the future role for the Titans, he has a lot to prove in year 2, with a better supporting cast. Does he look like he has fully recovered from the shoulder injury? He and Levis had the same shoulder injury, Levis goes for surgery, Ward does not. Guess Ward's injury was not as severe?

Jim: Cam is healthy, and he has looked good in practices. He has no limitations with the injury. Cam does have a lot to prove, and he's going to have a chance to do that. I think you'll see improvement in Year 2. Heck, we saw a lot of improvement from the first half of 2025 to the second half. All these injuries are different – yes, Levis and Ward both had shoulder injuries, but they were treated differently.

Eli Decko from Youngwood, Pennsylvania
Question: Hey Jim, I am not trying to be a Debbie Downer. I really put in some serious time to learn who the players we drafted are on the field. You don't just change who you are in a matter of weeks after playing a certain way for years ya know what I'm saying? On the weekend mailbag there was a question right after mine about the offensive line and June 1st. I'm glad you answered the way you did cuz fans do not really understand what the June 1st thing is about. But I reiterate that question. Why haven't they tried to get a Tackle, Guard, or a Center via trade? Is it because our only real trade worthy pieces are Jeff Simmons and Draft picks? We cannot move Jeff. Jeff is our defense. We all have seen what happened after they let Byard go, our secondary still hasn't even slightly recovered from that. Now Imagine if Jeff gets traded, OMG we may never get over that. There are some really good lineman and some teams that are gonna be really good even without them, and our draft position trend is gonna keep us in the top 10 for at least 2-3 more seasons, so the team what we potentially trade pick for player with will more than likely get a good return value. I would love to see a Tristan Wirfs or Penei Sewell in Nashville. Or even Smith from the Cowboys or one of Green Bay Packers tackles. Those teams have QBs that make their teammates better and do not necessarily cost their teams wins. So they could afford a trade like that. Our QB situation is unknown and if we do not protect whoever they think it is, nobody will ever know. I mean, a Cam Ward might actually turn into a decent passer if he isn't running for his life. Will Levis could be Elite if he wasn't running for his life. We will never know cuz the offensive line is so looked over in Nashville. We used to be known for our trenches man. From Runyan and Hopkins to Stewart and Roos to Lewan and Conklin. It is just wild man. Any ideas?

Jim: Hey Eli. The Titans aren't trading for a starting tackle – they have two starters in Dan Moore and JC Latham. If more help is coming on the offensive line it would be on the interior, or a back-up swing tackle. I've said this in here before: I think it makes sense to let the guys currently on the roster battle it out in OTAs and in minicamp, and even in training camp. If the GM decides more help is needed, then there will be a lot of opportunities to acquire guys leading up to the season, which is still over three months away. Remember, a bunch of guys will be released from other rosters in late August. Here at the start of June, my thinking is Austin Schlottmann will be the team's starting center, but he's going to have to earn it, and fight other guys off. The biggest question I have is who wins the right guard spot. Cordell Volson has the edge when it comes to experience, but some young contenders will be in the mix. And, again, keep an eye on the team's waiver claims down the road.

Frank Byrne from Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania
Question: I know that we made some player changes along the O-Line but my question involves the O-Line coaches. Who are all the new assistants and what are their backgrounds/experience? Have you heard how they have been received by the veteran players? Is the new offensive scheme more oline friendly?

Jim: Hey Frank. Carmen Bricillo is the team's o-line coach, and he has a lot of experience, with the Patriots, Raiders and Giants. He's a no-nonsense guy, and I've watched him work a lot this offseason. I've been impressed with how the players have responded to him. Isaac Williams is the assistant o-line coach, and he comes aboard after spending time with the Steelers. Obviously the task is to help develop players, and get the most out of them. Surprisingly, that didn't happen like everyone anticipated with veteran o-line coach Bill Callahan during his time here. I defended Callahan, and I'll never pin all the problems on him because he was working with some guys who frankly just weren't very good at times, and they have to take some ownership as well. It's going to take a combination of things for the unit to be better in 2026. We'll get a lot more clues when the pads come on.

Scott Weaver from Brownsville, Tennessee
Question: Hi Jim, hope all is well with you. My question is: Are the Titans only going to wear all white for every road game? I hope they wear the Titan blue pants for some away games I really like that look. Thanks for the britches report. Titans UP go Cam.

Jim: Hey Scott. The combos this year will be interesting to watch. I suspect the team will wear the new light blue over white most home games, but keep in mind they'll wear the Rivalries uniforms once. On the road you'll see white over the light blue, and I suspect an all-white look plenty. Moving forward, because of the white helmets, the all-white will hit differently than in the past.

Have a great week everyone!
