Tuesday Mailbag: Titans Fans React to Monday Night's Win Over the Dolphins

MailbagAskJim-(3)

NASHVILLE – Put one in the win column for the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans notched their first win of the season on Monday night against the Dolphins, and it changed the mood around the team, at least for the time being.

And, for the most part, the mood seems to have changed a bit in here as well.

Let's dive in and take a look…

Chris Berry from Cleveland, Tennessee
Question: My first trip to Miami and my first Monday Night Football in person too. It's been a fun trip and a neat city, but I gotta be honest that the majority of that game was a snooze-fest. Very few exciting plays and it seemed like the refs just kept interrupting the flow of the game. I thought our defense played gritty and Nick Folk was clutch (which true Titans fans can appreciate not being let down by the kicker). I'm really torn because Levis's raw talent could be huge long term and his development is important, but it sure seems like we would be 3-1 right now with the steady operation and ball control that Rudolph brings. Do you think "win now" or "develop Levis" is this staff's priority? I'm not sure "both" is a truthful answer.

Jim: Glad you were there to see it, Chris. I admit, it wasn't pretty. But I think everyone would rather win ugly that lose pretty. The Titans did on Monday night what they should have done against the Bears – play conservative with the lead, don't make mistakes, and let the defense win it. Maybe it was a lesson learned? As for what happens at quarterback, Coach Brian Callahan was pretty clear when asked about the plan moving forward – if Will Levis is healthy, he'll be the team's starter.

Eric Koehler from Las Vegas, Nevada
Question: A win is a win!!! The O-line played a lot better. Latham, Skoronski, Cushenberry, and Radunz made great blocks at the second level and looked pretty good pulling. T-Sweat was all over the place and I think introduced himself to the world. Last but not least, Jarvis Brownlee went under the radar with a pretty good game. This team is building but we are a QB and a right tackle away from being dangerous!!

Jim: Definitely some positive developments, Eric.

Joe Tanaka from Aiea, Hawaii
Question: Conservative play calling but error free by Rudolph. Of course the Dolphins were less than the Dolphins but I believe he deserves to practice with the 1s and it would give him a shot after the break. He could turn out to be our best shot at QB for the rest of the season.

Jim: I think you're going to be disappointed, Joe. Again, Callahan made it pretty clear he's planning to go back to Levis after the bye – as long as he's healthy.

Chuy Cano from Corpus Christi, Texas
Question: WHAT DID I TELL U MR. JIM!!....like what I've been saying!!!....put Rudolph and c what happens!!!.....Got the W......Big win....Dolphins look like trash tough....but good win...good confidence booster. Like the commentators were saying during the game....gonna b some big time talk abt starting qb after the bye week. And once again....Levis throws an interception....I was just waiting 4 the potential sack coming with him fumbling the ball. Thank goodness that didn't come. They should ride with Mason at least for the next game. What do u think? TITAN UP BABY! GOT 1ST WIN....SUPER BOWL HERE WE COME...HAHA

Jim: Super Bowl? The Titans need to find a way to win back-to-back games for the for the first time since October of 2022…

Dave George from St. Louis, Missouri
Question: Defense looked great and a win is a win. I know that Rudolph didn't put up huge stats but there were 2 drops that could have made his stats look better. I know that it's been said that this year is designed to see if Will is "the guy" or not. To me that sentiment is that this whole season is a long preseason. With another head scratching turnover, isn't it time to see if we can win with Rudolph or as fans are we supposed to resolve ourselves to the rest of the season being an evaluation? How about we evaluate Rudolph until he proves he isn't better than Will?

Jim: I hear what you're saying, Dave, but I don't think that's going to happen. And, as much as I've been impressed with Mason since he got here, it's my opinion the Titans need to give Levis the ball back. We just don't know if he is, or isn't, the guy yet. It's too early to pull the plug on him. The hope is the team can win games as we all find out.

Fred Trotman from St. Louis, Missouri
Question: Jim I mentioned it last week. 2 seasons ago our team started to suck after beating Green Bay at home. They come beat us at home and we win the following week. I'm not gonna get too hyped but. TITANS FANS it's looking good if I'm right. We even got 30 points!!! So happy to get a win. Plus my fantasy team finally won lol. Keep Rudolph in plz

Jim: Back-to-back from St. Louis! A few fun facts: As a kid, my dad used to take me to St. Louis just about every summer to see the Dodgers play the Cardinals at old Busch Stadium. Saw Jerry Reuss throw a one-hitter there back in the day. Before Saturday night games, we used to go to Charlie Gitto's downtown. It was Tommy Lasorda's favorite spot, and we got to talk to him a bunch of times there. Went to the V.P. Fair a few times, too. Attended mass at the Old Cathedral downtown. I still make it back when I get the chance – my buddy, Larry Leathers, lives there now. He's a guide at the Anheuser-Busch brewery, another fun thing to do. Hope all is well in St. Louis! Congrats on the fantasy football win, by the way.

Mark McCullough from Callahan County, Texas
Question: Back to back wins in Miami on Monday night. The curse is broken. A win is a win is a win.............especially on Monday night.

Jim: Which curse? 😊

Jeremy Rodriguez from Winchester, California
Question: Good Monday Night Jim!!! Great win! Defense played some great football and the O'line had a good night, the penalties were frustrating. There was a better flow when Rudolph got into the game. He didn't force the ball, he took what was given. Pollard and Spears had a great game! I don't think there will be a QB change, I really hope Levs took some notes on how to be patient and letting others carry the load. Hope the team gets some well deserved rest on the bye. Have a great week, see ya in SoCal on Nov 10th! As always TITAN UP!!!

Jim: Good to hear from you, Jeremy. See ya next month!

Jason Knight from Cleveland, Tennessee
Question: Hey Jim. I know you glad to see a win. The offensive line on the right side is in desperate need of help. Im glad to see a win myself even if it was sloppy. It was even hard to tell if Rudolph helped other than the fact he didn't turn the ball over which is a major plus. Do you think Levis starts after the off week if he is healthy or you think they might stick with Rudolph and give him some 1st team reps? Also do you think that is why they didn't really pass much with Rudolph in this game. Thanks for all you do and GOD Bless you and your family.

Jim: I think Levis starts if he's healthy. Rudolph threw three passes in the second half. Yes, I think the Titans were hoping to avoid a repeat of Chicago.

Doug Goldstein from Las Vegas, Nevada
Question: Pardon me if I don't exude an overabundance of joy over this "win". By the grace of an injury, Mr. Turnover didn't get the opportunity to throw any more picks (we all know more were coming). This easily could've ended in a loss if he stayed in. Beating a 3rd string qb ain't much to brag about, if Tua was in there the result would've been a different outcome.
I can't believe the team is so joyful over Callahan's first win. If it wasn't for bonehead Levis, he would possibly be celebrating his 4th win as head coach.
I've been hopeful to see Levis snap out of this case of the yips or whatever head trip he's going through but part of me was relieved to see Rudolph enter the game. As a fan I just want to see wins. I don't care who is on the field or who is coaching. If you can't get the job done, get someone in there that can. Sticking with Levis after the bye week seems like a bad choice but I get it, he's still the franchise qb until he isn't.
Jim, help me understand. What is the problem? They go out and get the receiving help, but seem too afraid to throw the ball, and when Levis does throw, it's ridiculously directly to the opposing team.

Jim: So, did you expect the Titans to be somber after the win? I hear ya, Doug – I know it wasn't pretty. But questioning how "joyful" the team was after the game is being a little picky. The team hadn't won a game all year, and I think it's safe to say coaches and players were feeling the heat, and pressure. And, again, the Titans didn't throw it in the second half last night because of the reasons I've previously stated in here. Levis has to be better, no doubt. But he's still young, and learning.

Connie Alinikoff from Hendersonville, Tennessee
Question: Good happy Tuesday Mr. Wyatt. Going thru Instagram this morning, I read several posts from Titans fans complaining how the game was won. Seriously? For three weeks posts were angry and complaining about the losses, demanding that Rudolph replace Levis. That happens, Titans win and they've managed to complain about that. Some people are never satisfied. Hope you have a blessed week. Titan up!

Jim: I've noticed some of this myself, Connie. I think it's because so many fans expected the team to go undefeated this year …

Bill Holmes from Fairport, New York
Question: Happy we got a win, but had we lost to a decimated Dolphins team that might have sent half the season ticket holders to StubHub.
I cringed when our first snap was a penalty, and as I watched the first couple of series I noticed how scattered we looked. Good teams break huddle, line up, and you sense that all eleven players are in sync and are ready to execute. We looked like half the team wasn't sure what we were about to do. But once Rudolph came in, we looked like a different team. Confident. Poised. Prepared. I'm sure it wasn't just me thinking that.
But I am not on the "Bench Levis" team; he needs to start to get experience and improve. I thought holding him out to not risk further injury was wise, especially with the bye week coming up. (And what genius decided that teams need a bye was early as week 5, anyway? ) Rudolph did what a backup should do - be ready to go at any time, take charge, and execute the plan. But he's likely not the future (although I thought the same when Tannehill took over...)
Love our defense, and although we won't be a playoff threat, we will make a lot of other teams uncomfortable along the way. As a realist I'll be happy with continued improvement, competitive play, and 2024 giving us clear personnel decisions for who is here in 2025. Game balls to Rudolph, Folk and Sweat and TITAN UP!

Jim: SeatGeek is actually the official sponsor of the Titans, Bill…

Greg Stauffer from Charlotte, North Carolina
Question: Jim, this is more of statement, but I would love to hear your input! I know you are Dodger fan. Well unfortunately I am a life-long Cardinal fan. The point is the Cards have a horrible, cheap owner, who will not spend money on staff or players to win. All he wants is the fans to pay him, even though he will not spend to put a winner on the field. With that being said the Titans have a great owner. She loves the team, she loves the fans and she will pay to win. As a retired Military & Business executive, leadership is the single most important thing and starts at the top. Without great leadership you future is always in doubt! The Titans are blessed, the Cardinals are cursed! I think the Dodgers are blessed as well! So no matter what happens the rest of the year, Amy & Ran will get it right! What say you Jim? Thanks for all you work to keep us die-hard fan in the know about our Titans!

Jim: Thanks for taking the time, Greg. No doubt Amy Adams Strunk wants a winner.

Dan O'Hara from San Antonio, Texas
Question: Finally, it's a different team with Rudolph as QB. Same thing happened the last three games when he was with Pittsburgh. Methodical with stay in the pocket grit. The last plays of the first half showed his ability. Now spread the field and let him throw. Best to you and the Titans.

Jim: Good to hear from you, Dan. Mason Rudolph is a pro.

Reinhard Schiendorfer from Fosdinovo, Italy
Question: It's going to be a long road to the playoffs.
Do not ask how, but we've realised our first W.
It's going to be a long road to the superbowl.
At least they've realised now that they have to let our King run.

Jim: Grazie, Reinhard. Buon Lavoro!

Have a great week everyone!
