Tuesday Mailbag: Jim Wyatt Answers Questions From Titans Fans as Free Agency Begins

mailborgo

NASHVILLE – Free agency is under way.

I'm sure you've seen the breaking news across the NFL in the past 24 hours, including a lot of deals that include the Titans.

Just another reminder that here at www.TennesseeTitans.com, in most cases you won't see anything announced until players have passed a physical, and officially signed.

It's all part of a busy week in these parts, as "a special fan event celebrating the next chapter of the organization" is also scheduled for Thursday in Nashville.

While we wait for some of this, let's dive into another Titans mailbag…

Rob Haye from Burlington, Ontario
Question: Hi Jim. Been a while since I wrote in, but enjoy reading every week, and hearing what others have to say about our team.
So the coaching staff being put together, looks like it has potential, given at least the amount of experience combined on both sides of ball should be beneficial to the team development.
Free agency, a few others may chime in, but reports are we signed Mitch Trubinsky, so have to assume he is being signed as a veteran and the back up to Ward, so this would seem to lead to conclusion that we are moving on from Will Levis already?
So biggest downfall I feel is the QB development on this team for the last 20 years, looking at all the QB's we drafted and released and we failed to develop. Willis 2nd rounder we release, he proves himself and just went as one of the 1st picks in this FA period, now Levis who really never got a fair shake must be asking himself looks like I'm out, and never got the chance either.
I really hope we don't fail Ward, like we have at so many others.

Jim: Hey Rob. Good to hear from you again. I've discussed Levis and the QB situation in here a lot lately, including on Saturday, when I said I expected a veteran QB to be signed. I've also said in here on multiple occasions that I like Levis. But let's not act like he didn't have some chances as a starter. Mistakes, and unfortunately a injury, derailed his opportunities. The team is going to give Cam Ward every opportunity to be this team's franchise QB moving forward, and the decision to sign a veteran, presumably as Cam's primary back-up, should be further proof of that.

Jake Edmunds from Hermitage, Tennessee
Question: Hello Mr. Jim Wyatt. As a fan of both the Titans and your reporting, I am attempting to make contact with anyone connected to the Titans to share some potential fan/gameday experience ideas. I sincerely hope this makes it into the right hands! Thank you for your consideration and Titan Up!
• The "Cam" Cam - jumbotron displaying anyone in the audience wearing a Cam Ward jersey OR AI overlay making people in a Ward jersey look like Cam Ward OR a literal Cam Ward cam following his every move
• "Two Tone Blue" chant - a call & response style chant for in and/or outside the stadium. Call = "TWO TONE!" and the response is "BLUE!" similar to a "Boomer Sooner" or "OH - IO"
• National Anthem - replacing "O' Say, can you see" with "TEN-NES-SEE" similar to the Predators replacing "you see" with JUUSE
• 4th quarter song - personally I think anything other than Johnny Cash is better at this point, but I would strongly recommend Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks.
Once again, I do hope this finds you well and can be a resource to the parties responsible for these decisions. Excited to review your reporting this week for Free Agency and the uniform reveal!

Jim: Thanks for taking the time, Jake. I'll drop these in here, and maybe it will generate some more buzz. Some interesting thoughts, though I admit I'm not a fan of these anthem interruptions. And, I have to admit, I like Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues myself …

Eli Decko from Youngwood, Pennsylvania
Question: Big fan of the Wan'Dale Robinson signing. TONS of money but the 38million in guarantee is safe. Funny we sign Trubisky and haven't traded Levis or Ward yet. Not a smart play. The fact we (didn't) throw a Brinks truck at Tyler Linderbaum is very frustrating. The Texans got better. I do not like the TE signing. Cool he played for DaBoll. But he blocked. Chig and Helm need to be there. Helm is not TE1 level yet. He just isn't. Yeah he plays hard and is a company man, but so is Chig. If he goes to NE it will never end the Vrabel/Titans tension from the fans. You know we all love Vrabel still Jim and you hate writing us back about him, although you like him too. Samuel staying in Pittsburgh is rough. We gotta get the legal Tampering period going man. Spend, Spend, Spend!!!!!

Jim: I like that you're at least halfway happy, Eli. Well, maybe a ¼ happy it sounds like. Trade Cam? Huh?

James Logan from Fayetteville, Tennessee
Question: Way to go!!!!! By far the finest free agency group since the Titans have been in Nashville. Gives us a great deal of flexibility in the number 4 draft position. Very encouraging to see the new captains of the ship.

Jim: A lot of action around here, James!

Zoe Simone Mathis from Brentwood, Tennessee
Question: Is Cam Ward going to be playing this upcoming season.
And, is he out of the brace?

Jim: Hi Zoe. Yes, Cam is going to play.
At Robert Saleh's introductory presser back in January, I don't think Cam was wearing a brace.

DeAndre Hunter from Clarksville, Tennessee
Question: Hey, Mr. Wyatt, been a minute. When it comes from an offensive and defensive standpoint, what do you think we need to accomplish? Many problems need to be addressed this offseason, and there could be ways to stitch the seam up without it tearing again (if you're picking up what I'm putting down). I also just wanted to tell you I made it in the Tennessee All-State game as one of the few players from Clarksville, and our 7v7 team just scrimmaged yesterday. I think I did well. My stats were 5 Forced Incompletions, 4 downs (tackles technically), all while cramping in my thigh. I hope you guys will come see me play in July, hopefully. Also, im a 8th grader about to go to High School now. The 8th-grade season didn't go as planned, but that's okay (refs were horrible, our only two losses, which put us out of the championship, and we don't have playoffs, just straight championship).

Jim: Hey DeAndre. Haven't heard from you in a while. Titans need a lot of help, on both sides of the ball. The team has started to fill some of those needs. Sounds like you're a baller! Best of luck moving forward. Maybe we'll see you in the new uniforms one day…

Mason Trujillo from San Antonio, Texas
Question: Will you guys draft Jeremiah Love?

Jim: Hmmm… maybe.

Adrian Lopez from Caracas, Venezuela
Question: Hey Jim espero todo est bien... Gracias Jim Titan Up...

Malakai Brashears from Noblesville, Indiana
Question: Is David Bailey or Arvell Reese the better pick. They are both absolutely phenomenal! Or is there any other players in mind?

Jim: I guess it depends on who you ask. And yes, there are a bunch of other players in mind.

Greg Swaw from Bon Aqua, Tennessee
Question: Hi there Jim first a comment and then I'll get to my question. First off I feel that we should plug as many holes as possible before the draft so we don't get pigeon holed on draft night being forced to weigh need over best overall player available. We need Love period, of course that's assuming management opens the coin purse this year and gets some higher end talent on the o-line in particularly. No matter how fancy teams try to get there's an age old formula that always works, good defense + good running game + play action over the top. This young team has to learn how to win first then you start teaching the flashy stuff.
Anyway my question has to do with the Sweat trade and it's technically two questions. I get that we need pash rushers in a bad way that said why was this a straight up one for one trade? Considering Johnson hasn't been anything special and he's on the final year of his contract I honestly feel like they could have done better. I've been watching football my whole life and played through school and a 3-4 defense without a massive block eater at NT is never as good as one with said mammoth human in the middle, does this trade lend to spending more time in a 4-3 defense under Saleh? I personally have always preferred a 4-3 with 4 rushers and 7 in coverage or screaming down hill on run plays

Jim: Hey Greg. I definitely think that's going to happen, as far as plugging holes goes. As I'm sure you've seen, it's already started. As you've noticed, we haven't announced the Sweat trade yet because it's not official yet. But let's keep in honest in here while we wait for it to be finalized. You said the Titans could have done better considering Johnson hasn't been anything special. Tell me, what has T'Vondre done that's been so special? Sure, he's had his moments, but fewer than Johnson.

Have a great week everyone!
