Titans WR Corey Davis: "I want to be out there."

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Decked out in a Titans jersey, receiver Corey Davis watched his teammates practice here on Friday night at Centennial High, and he didn't like it.

Davis suffered a hamstring injury a day earlier, and is "week to week," according to Titans coach Mike Mularkey.

The team's first-round pick said he plans to work hard, and return as soon as he possibly can.

"Obviously I was bummed, because I can't practice the next few days. I am a competitor, and I want to be out there and practice and play," Davis said Friday night. "But we are just taking it slow at this point.

"I got real emotional about it (when it first happened). I am a competitor and I want to be out there and do what I can to help out this great team. But I guess that is just not in God's plans. I am just going to take it slow and take it week by week."

Mularkey ruled Davis out for the team's first preseason game against the Jets next Saturday.

Davis was asked if he'll be back in time for the team's season-opener against the Raiders on September 10, and he said he hopes to be ready.

"I believe so,'' he said.

Davis said he dealt with a hamstring injury in college at Western Michigan, so he "knows what to expect and what I have to do." Davis said he knew he suffered the injury when it happened in Thursday's practice, and said he's fortunate it's not serious as he feared. Davis underwent an MRI on Thursday.

"The guys are supportive, from Marcus (Mariota) on down,'' Davis said. "They kind of understand what it takes, and you have to take it slow, especially me. I want to get out there and I am very impatient. But I trust coach Mularkey and I trust the training staff and they are going to get me right."

Davis, who caught 97 passes for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns last season at Western Michigan, arrived in the NFL with plenty of fanfare. His 5,285 career receiving yards is an FBS record, and he ranks second in NCAA history in career receiving touchdowns with 52.

And Davis got off to a nice start in camp.

He'd been working with the first-team group in practices before the injury, and routinely made plays while working against the team's defense.

Mularkey said he's not worried about the injury because "there's nothing I can do about it."

On Friday night, receivers Eric Decker and Rishard Matthews worked with the first team, with rookie Taywan Taylor in the slot.

"(Corey) is just going to try and get better every day," Mularkey said. "I'll know better in a week."
