Titans-Buccaneers Preseason Week 1 Postgame Notes

TEAM NOTES

  • The Titans fell to the Buccaneers by a score of 29-7 in the 2025 preseason opener.
  • The game marked the first Titans preseason game under new general manager Mike Borgonzi, who was hired in January.
  • The Titans captains for the game were long snapper Morgan Cox, wide receiver Calvin Ridley, safety Amani Hooker and outside linebacker Jaylen Harrell.
  • Eight of the team's nine draft picks received their first NFL preseason experience, with the lone exception being third-round safety Kevin Winston Jr.

TEAM NOTES - OFFENSE

  • The starting offense for the Titans included quarterback Cam Ward; running back Tony Pollard; wide receivers Calvin Ridley and Van Jefferson; tight ends Chig Okonkwo and Gunnar Helm; left tackle Dan Moore Jr.; left guard Peter Skoronski; center Corey Levin; right guard Andrew Rupcich; and right tackle JC Latham. Ward and Helm were the two rookie starters on offense. The majority of the starting offense played two series.
  • Twelve different players caught at least one pass in the contest.

TEAM NOTES - DEFENSE

  • The starting defense included cornerbacks Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and Darrell Baker Jr.; safeties Amani Hooker and Xavier Woods; linebackers Cody Barton and James Williams Sr.; outside linebackers Dre'Mont Jones and Oluwafemi Oladejo; and defensive linemen Sebastian Joseph-Day, James Lynch and Timmy Horne. Oladejo was the only rookie starter on defense.
  • On cornerback Davion Ross' fumble recovery in the third quarter, the Titans recorded their first defensive fumble recovery in the preseason since Aug. 25, 2023 against the Patriots, when Jayden Peevy recovered a strip sack by Denico Autry.

QB BRANDON ALLEN

  • Made his Titans preseason debut.
  • Entered the game in the second quarter and finished with six completions on 12 pass attempts for 62 yards in his first action with the Titans.
  • Connected with tight end Gunnar Helm for a 16-yard gain in the third quarter.

WR ELIC AYOMANOR

  • Made his rookie preseason debut.

LB CODY BARTON

  • Started in his Titans preseason debut and recorded a tackle.

S JOSHUAH BLEDSOE

  • Finished fifth on the defense with five tackles in his Titans preseason debut.

QB TIM BOYLE

  • Made his Titans preseason debut and completed four passes for 24 yards.

S MIKE BROWN

  • Posted four tackles and added a pass defensed.

CB JARVIS BROWNLEE JR.

  • Started at cornerback and notched a pass defensed.

RB JULIUS CHESTNUT

  • Rushed for 18 yards on three attempts and added an eight-yard reception.

WR CHIMERE DIKE

  • Made his rookie preseason debut.
  • Recorded one reception for six yards and returned a kickoff for 32 yards.

LB CEDRIC GRAY

  • Tied for the team lead with seven tackles.

P JOHNNY HEKKER

  • Made his Titans preseason debut.
  • Punted four times for 178 yards and a 44.5-yard average (40.3 net), including a 53-yard boot that pinned Tampa Bay inside the 20.

TE GUNNAR HELM

  • Started in his rookie preseason debut.
  • Contributed a 16-yard catch on third-and-two in the third quarter.

S AMANI HOOKER

  • Started at safety and recorded two tackles.

DT TIMMY HORNE

  • Made his Titans preseason debut and tied for the team lead with seven tackles, including a tackle for loss.
  • His seven tackles tied for the most by a Titans defensive lineman in a preseason game since 2017 and were the most by a Titans defensive lineman since Jayden Peevy and Sam Okuayinonu each had seven tackles against Arizona on Aug. 27, 2022.

WR JHA'QUAN JACKSON

  • Returned a kickoff for 23 yards and also saw action at wide receiver.

WR VAN JEFFERSON

  • Started in his Titans preseason debut.

OLB DRE'MONT JONES

  • Started in his Titans preseason debut.

DE SEBASTIAN JOSEPH-DAY

  • Started at defensive end and notched a quarterback hit.

WR TYLER LOCKETT

  • Made his Titans preseason debut.
  • Converted a third-and-six with a seven-yard grab in the second quarter.

T DAN MOORE JR.

  • Started at left tackle in his Titans preseason debut.

RB KALEL MULLINGS

  • Made his rookie preseason debut.
  • Led the offense with seven carries for a team-high 33 yards, including a 12-yard rush in the third quarter.

TE CHIG OKONKWO

  • Started at tight end.
  • Converted a third-and-nine with a 10-yard reception during a touchdown drive in the second quarter.

OLB OLUWAFEMI OLADEJO

  • Started at outside linebacker in his rookie preseason debut.
  • Finished with four tackles.

WR BRYCE OLIVER

  • Converted a third-and-10 with an 11-yard grab on a pass from Brandon Allen in the third quarter.
  • Also participated in punt coverage as a gunner.

RB TONY POLLARD

  • Started at running back and carried four times for nine yards.
  • Scored a one-yard touchdown on the Titans' second drive to culminate an 11-play, 65-yard march.

WR JAMES PROCHE II

  • Made his Titans preseason debut.
  • Returned a kickoff for 21 yards and also saw time at wide receiver.

NT ISAIAH RAIKES

  • Made his rookie preseason debut.
  • Finished with four tackles and a pass defensed.

WR CALVIN RIDLEY

  • Started at wide receiver and recorded a team-best three receptions for 50 yards.
  • Posted a catch on three consecutive plays in the second quarter, two of which resulted in a first down. He connected with quarterback Cameron Ward for a 27-yard completion, followed by receptions of 10 yards and 13 yards. The drive ended with a Titans touchdown.

CB DAVION ROSS

  • Created a turnover in the third quarter, forcing a fumble against wide receiver Jacob Harris and then recovering the fumble.
  • Added three tackles.

WR TJ SHEFFIELD

  • Recorded a 12-yard reception from Tim Boyle in his first NFL preseason action as a rookie.
  • Also notched a team-high 52 kickoff return yards on two attempts, including a 29-yard return in the fourth quarter.

K JOEY SLYE

  • Made his Titans preseason debut and made his only extra point attempt in addition to handling kickoff duties.

RB TYJAE SPEARS

  • Recorded a 13-yard reception before leaving the contest with an injury in the second quarter. He also had three rushing attempts.

QB CAMERON WARD

  • Started in his rookie preseason debut and played two series.
  • Completed five of eight passes for a team-high 67 yards and an 89.1 passer rating.
  • Led an 11-play, 65-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter. He completed five of his six attempts on the drive, including a pair of completions to convert third downs. All but one completion went for 10 yards or more.
  • His first completion was a 27-yarder to Calvin Ridley in the second quarter, the first of three completions on three consecutive plays–each to Ridley for at least 10 yards.
  • Also connected with Chig Okonkwo for a gain of 10 yards on third-and-nine.

OLB JIHAD WARD

  • Recorded the defense's first sack of the preseason, dropping Buccaneers quarterback Kyle Trask in the first quarter.

TE JOSH WHYLE

  • Caught a seven-yard pass from Tim Boyle in the fourth quarter.

LB JAMES WILLIAMS SR.

  • Started and tied for third on the defense with six tackles, including a tackle for loss.
  • Helped force a punt with a two-yard tackle for loss on third down in the second quarter.
  • Added a special teams tackle.

S JULIUS WOOD

  • Tied for third on the defense with six tackles.

S XAVIER WOODS

  • Started in his Titans preseason debut.
