NASHVILLE – Cam Ward created a bit of a stir with his postgame comments on Sunday.
The Titans quarterback was pretty blunt after Sunday's 26-0 loss to the Texans, which dropped the team to 0-4.
So, what's the feedback been like from his teammates?
"It's been good" Ward said on Wednesday. "It's also been more of me seeing their side as well. We had some conversations, but it's been good. We're still the same teammates in and outside the locker room. I've got some good guys around me. We know that we haven't played our best ball yet. We've got a lot of potential on this roster. We've just got to go prove it on Sundays."
Ward's comments after the game – "If we keep it a buck right now, we a$$" – got national attention. Ward followed that line up with: "We dropped a quarter of our (expletive) games, and we have yet to do anything."
Coach Brian Callahan acknowledged Ward is emotional, because he wants to win.
"He's still a young player," Callahan said of Ward. "He's the number one overall pick. He's a face of a franchise, if you will. He's got high expectations for himself. We have high expectations around him. We all want to meet those. His ability to be in that spotlight in that moment I think is a growing process for him. I think he's growing up. I think he's starting to understand the weight of his words. What those things mean when he speaks and everyone's listening and watching. Even though he follows up the commentary with a lot of the right things, it's the one-liner that gets taken. He's learning how to deal with you guys and how to understand how to have those conversations and still maintain the image that he wants to maintain as a starting quarterback. Growing up is not always easy. I think there's some things that he's learning along the way just like we all do."
Ward said he wasn't surprised by how much national attention his comments received.
"They're going to blow it up no matter what, whether it's good or bad for the Titans," Ward said. "So, we're trying to win football games. That's the biggest thing, and that's what we're going try to go do this week.
"I'm caring about my teammates and trying to win football games."
Next up for the Titans is a game on Sunday at the Arizona Cardinals.
Ward said he's focused on getting better, and winning.
He doesn't want to get used to losing, but he does want to learn from it.
"I've lost football games before," he said. "It's more just learning from it fast and minimizing it fast. That's the biggest thing. Also, we've got a lot of games we've got to go try to go 1-0 this week, try to 1-0 every week. So it's really just trying to establish and try to get that first one.
"I just think they're real good," Ward said of the Cardinals. "Especially number 3 (Budda Baker), I think he makes a lot of plays on that defense. They have a great interior. They got great guys around them, the back end to help them. They do a lot of stuff with three safeties deep. So, it's really more about us putting the ball in space, having them tackle us, then being accurate, and then run the ball good."
