NASHVILLE – The Titans have elected five captains for the 2020 season.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill, running back Derrick Henry, safety Kevin Byard, defensive lineman DaQuan Jones and punter Brett Kern are the captains for this season.
"We voted this morning," Titans coach Mike Vrabel said on his weekly radio show with Mike Keith on 104.5-FM on Monday night. "There were some guys that got a lot of votes on defense, kind of split that next wave of votes. But in the end, I think that those guys were the runaway winners.
"I think with Derrick, we have talked about the leadership role, and the improvement that he's made in that area. Obviously, Brett has been such a consistent, positive player for us on our punt team, and the job that he does. You let the players vote, and then we'll hold one spot for (a game day captain) that we feel like each week deserve it or are worthy of it."
Tannehill joined the Titans prior to the 2019 season, and he finished as the NFL's top-rated passer while guiding the team to the AFC Championship Game.
Henry, like Tannehill, was named to the Pro Bowl following the 2019 season after he led the NFL in rushing last season.
Byard, named a captain in 2019 as well, leads the NFL in interceptions with 17 over the past three seasons.
Jones, heading into his seventh season with the team, has recorded 234 tackles and seven sacks from 2014-2019 with the team.
Kern, named first-team All-Pro by the Associated Press in 2019 in addition to being named to his third straight Pro Bowl, is set to begin his 13th NFL season – his 12th with the Titans.
The Titans kick off the 2020 season next Monday night at Denver.
