TRAINING CAMP PREVIEW: SPECIAL TEAMS
In camp: K Joey Slye, P Tommy Townsend, LS Morgan Cox, Chimere Dike, Carnell Tate, Julius Chestnut, Mason Kinsey, Courtney Jackson, K.J. Osborn, Xavier Restrepo, Hank Beatty, Bishop Fitzgerald.
Player to watch: Chimere Dike. In 2025, Dike established the all-time NFL rookie record for all-purpose yards, and he also had the most all-purpose yards in a season by any NFL player since Darren Sproles in 2011. Dike also broke the franchise record for single-season punt return average. He was named a Pro Bowler, and also an All-Pro. So, what cam Dike do for an encore? Dike has worked this offseason to learn a new offense – he's on his fourth coaching staff in as many years – and to get his body in even better prepared for the rigors of an NFL season. And, after a stellar rookie season, he's hungry for more.
What I've seen so far: Slye didn't kick in much in the offseason practices, but when he did, he was perfect, making all seven of his attempts, including a 58-yarder and a 60-yarder. Townsend worked on his craft after joining the team back in March. A bunch of guys worked in the return game, including Dike. Carnell Tate, Mason Kinsey, Courtney Jackson, K.J. Osborn and Hank Beatty were among those who lined up to field punts in practices. Special teams coordinator John Fassel introduced some new drills to the group, including one during rookie camp that generated some buzz on social media. Fassel's track record – and his coaching debut in Tennessee a year ago – has proven he knows what he's doing.
What I think the Titans need to see in camp: The Titans re-signed Slye this offseason because the team felt he was consistent in his results and approach in 2025. The team would like to see him build on his successful offseason trek in camp, while Townsend settles in as well. Dike proved as a rookie he's up for the challenge, and I feel safe in penciling him in as the team's primary punt returner in 2026. Just how much Dike is involved in the offense might help determine whether he's the kick returner, too. Others will be in the mix competing for return spots as well. When camp ends and when roster cuts are approaching, how much certain players can help on special teams will break ties in some cases. These could be guys used on coverage and return teams. The Titans would love for guys to make a bigger case for themselves here.
