49ers Coach Mike Singletary's Conference Call With Nashville Media

HEAD COACH MIKE SINGLETARY

(on his memories of Jeff Fisher during their time with the Bears)

**

Jeff was always with Buddy Ryan. He got hurt a few times and he became the guy that Buddy really gravitated towards as a future coach. Buddy couldn't get away from him.

(on if he and Coach Fisher have stayed in touch over the years)

Not really. We say hello when we see each other. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jeff. Each time we see each other we talk. But no, we haven't really kept in touch.

(on if he thought Jeff Fisher would be a head coach in the NFL one day)

Jeff could have done anything he wanted to do. He's a very bright guy. He's a guy that once he puts his mind to something, he can do it very well. Once he did decide to go the coaching route, Buddy (Ryan) tracked him down and got him into a situation where he couldn't say no and I knew it was a matter of time.

(on if Chris Johnson is difficult to prepare for and if he can compare him to another running back)

**

He's very difficult to prepare for. As far as a comparison, no not off the top of my head. He's a guy that's really deceptive. I think every time he has his hands on the ball, you really have to know where he's at. You kind of hold your breath until he's on the ground.

(on what he saw out of Vince Young against Jacksonville)

Well, I'll put it this way. I think Vince is a complete quarterback. I think he's going to continue to get better. I was very proud of how he is handling himself for the most part. It's been tough for him, but I'm very proud of what Vince has been able to accomplish. As far as can he beat you with his arms or feet, he can beat you either way. He is definitely a double threat, bright guy. He is a guy we definitely were not anticipating or hoping that we'd see.

(on how Alex Smith is better suited as a starter now than before)

In terms of percentages it would be difficult to put a number on it. He is a lot better. He is a lot calmer. The game has slowed down for him. His reads are better. He has more of a command of the offense. I'm very excited about Alex going forward and we just have to continue to take it a day at a time. I'm just very happy that he has this opportunity.

(on Brandon Jones)

Brandon's doing fine. He was really coming on in training camp. He got hurt and of course that was a big setback for him. He's coming back and just working hard. I'm very proud of the way he's adjusted to things. He's just continuing to work his way back into the lineup.
