Biography

PRO: The Titans signed Tommy Townsend as an unrestricted free agent early in the 2026 offseason. The 6-foot-1-inch, 191-pounder possesses an impressive ability to flip field position with precision and power. The Florida product entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs and spent his first four seasons with club, including two 
Super Bowl title runs in 2022 and 2023. Prior to arriving in Tennessee, Townsend spent two campaigns with the Houston Texans.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:  
• Townsend is a two-time Super Bowl champion with more playoff experience (17 games and 53 punts) than any other punter in the league.
• In 2022, Townsend was named first-team Associated Press All-Pro and a Pro Bowler after recording the highest punting average in single-season (50.4) and highest net punt average in a single-season (45.6) in Chiefs history.

TITANS TIDBITS:  
• Townsend earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2014.
• Townsend's older brother Johnny punted at Florida in college and then with the Raiders, Ravens, Chiefs and Titans in between 2018 and 2021. He appeared in three games for the Titans in 2021 punting 11 times for 465 yards with two kicks placed inside the 20-yard line.

2025 (17/0, 2/0 - Houston):  Saw action in all 17 games and punted 72 times for 3,424 yards (47.6 avg.) with a long of 73 yards and 30 kicks placed inside the 20-yard line. 
• Against Denver (11/2), set a career-high with eight punts for 420 yards, including a season-long 73 yard punt. Placed two kicks inside the 20-yard line.
• At Kansas City (12/7), tied his career-high with eight punts for 329 yards.
• At New England (1/18), punted five times for a postseason career-high of 294 yards with one kick placed inside the 20-yard line.

2024 (17/0, 2/0 - Houston): Handled the teams punting duties in all 17 games and punted the ball 76 times for 3,649 yards (48.0 avg.), including 39 punts placed inside the 20-yard line. 
• At Indianapolis (9/8), made his Texans debut and punted once for 56 yards.
• At Green Bay (10/20), punted the ball six times for 307 yards, including a 66-yard punt.
• Against Baltimore (12/25), punted six times for 289 yards with three kicks placed inside the 20-yard line. Had one punt for 69 yards, his longest of the season.

2023 (17/0, 4/0 - Kansas City):  Appeared in all 17 contests and punted 59 times for 2,776 yards (47.1 avg.) with a long of 68 and 20 placed inside the 20-yard line. Played in all four contests in route to Super Bowl LVIII and punted 15 times for 715 yards with four kicks placed inside the 20-yard line and a long of 62. 
• Against Miami (11/5), punted a season-high six times for 302 yards with a long of 68 yards and two placed inside the 20-yard line.
• Against San Francisco (2/11), punted five times for 254 yards in the Super Bowl victory. Placed two punts inside the 20-yard line and a postseason career high net average of 50.8. His net average ranks first in franchise history since the stat started being tracked in 1976.

2022 (17/0, 3/0): Played in all 17 games and recorded 53 punts for 2,672 yards (50.4 avg.) with a long of 76 yards and 22 kicks placed inside the 20-yard line. He tallied a net average of 45.6. His punting average and net average both rank as single-season highs in Chiefs history. Also recorded two of the top five longest punts in franchise history. Named September AFC Special Teams Player of the Month as well Week 1 AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Named first team Associated Press All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl. 
• Against L.A. Chargers (9/15), booted the ball 74 yards, tying former punter Bob Grupp for the fifth-longest punt in Chiefs history.
• At Denver (12/11), punted the ball three times for 199 yards including a 76-yarder which tied former punter Dan Stryzinksi for the third-longest punt in the franchise record book.

2021 (16/0, 3/0 - Kansas City):  Competed in 16 games and recorded 1,746 yards on 37 punts with an average of 47.2 and long punt of 68. Twenty of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line. Appeared in all three postseason contests and punted 10 times for 435 yards. Named November AFC Player of the Month and Week 9 AFC Player of the Week.  
• Against Green Bay (11/7), punted a season-high six times for 341 yards with five kicks placed inside the 20-yard line. Totaled a then career high net average of 54.3.

2020 (16/1, 3/0 - Kansas City):  Appeared in all 16 games as a rookie and punted 52 times for 2,339 yards (45.0 avg.) with 20 placed inside the 20-yard line. Appeared in all three playoff contests and totaled four punts for 151 yards with one kick placed inside the 20-yard line. Named Week 15 AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Named to the PFWA All-Rookie team. Made his NFL debut against Houston (9/10). 
• Against Houston (9/10), punted three times for 136 yards in his NFL debut.
• Against New England (10/5), recorded four punts for 243 yards for an average of 60.8 yards, setting a new Chiefs single-game franchise record.
• At New Orleans (12/20), punted a season-high six times for 243 yards with three kicks placed inside the 20-yard line.
• At Tampa Bay (2/7), punted three times in the Super Bowl for 107 yards.

COLLEGE: 
• Played in 26 games over four seasons (2016-19) at Florida and recorded 93 punts for 4,162 yards for a 44.8 average with 44 kicks placed inside the 20-yard line and a long of 71 yards. Holds the Florida school record for most yards by a punter in a single game (432, nine punts) and the seventh-longest punt (71 yards; twice). Began his career at University of Tennessee and redshirted before transferring to Florida.
• As a senior (2019), totaled 1,847 yards on 42 punts, averaging 44.0 yards per kick. Recorded 11 punts of over 50 yards and downed 20 punts inside the 20-yard line.
• As a junior (2018), finished the season averaging 45.4 yards as he totaled 2,315 yards on 51 punts. Booted 14 punts of over 50 yards and registered 24 punts inside the 20-yard line. Named second team All-SEC by Athlon Sports and was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award.
• As a sophomore (2017), did not see any game action.
• As a redshirt freshman (2016), sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules.
• As a freshman (2016), did not see game action and redshirted at Tennessee. Transferred to Florida after the season.

PERSONAL:  
• Attended Boone (Orlando, Fla.) High School where he was a U.S. Army All-American.
• As a senior (2015), was named a first team All-American by Scout.com and all-state by Statewide Sports Writers and FHSCA, All-Central Florida (Orlando Sentinel) and All-District (FHSCA). Averaged 43.0 yards per punt as a senior. Rated as the No. 1 punter in the country coming out of high school by Kohl's Kicking and Chris Sailor Kicking
• As a junior (2014), garnered defensive player of the week honors from the Orlando Touchdown Club following a two interception performance against Edgewater High School
• Also competed as cornerback and quarterback as well as played baseball.

• Son of Clay and Susan Townsend who both attended Florida. Has one brother, Johnny, who also attended Florida and held multiple school records as a punter himself.
