NASHVILLE – Five practices into training camp, and Titans quarterback Cam Ward is far from satisfied.
On Wednesday, he gave a pretty blunt assessment on how he thinks things have been going.
"I just think we're very mid right now," Ward said. "From my position to up front to the receivers position. But at the end of the day, it all starts with me. I just don't we're at where we need to be. But we have a little bit of time, so every day we get better as a whole. We're a young team, and that is no excuse. At the end of the day we have to come with the right mindset every day and come to work."
Ward spent extra time throwing to his receivers after Wednesday's session, something he's done on a regular basis in his first NFL training camp.
For Ward, it's all about getting better, and dealing with the ups and downs.
"It's not really about bouncing back, it's about getter better every day," Ward said. "I think we just have to get better at the little things, especially myself. We all have a lot of stuff to continue to get better at, and I'm excited for it."
Ward was 5-of-8 in the 7-on-7 period in today's practice, and 6-of-15 in the team periods, making him 11-of-23 for the day.
Ward was intercepted by cornerback Roger McCreary on Wednesday on a pass that was tipped by linebacker Cody Barton.
In five training camp practices, Ward has completed a combined 57-of-101 passes in 7-on-7 and team periods combined. He had his best practice of camp in the Saturday practice at Nissan Stadium, but the last few days the offense has had more issues getting in sync.
"I have to get on the same page with my receivers, watch more film, and be more accurate with the football," Ward said. "I know I have a good group around me, the o-line, the running backs, the receiving corps. It's all about us continuing to get better every day and building that camaraderie with each other."
Titans Coach Brian Callahan said Ward hasn't flinched.
"It's just sort of how he's wired," Callahan said of Ward. "Everything about his mental makeup and how he operates when he makes mistakes is everything you'd want to see from a coaching perspective, and so I feel really good about how he'll respond to any negativity in general."
The Titans travel to Tampa a week from today for a joint practice with the Buccaneers, leading up to a preseason game on August 9. The following week the team will practice twice against the Falcons before an August 15 preseason game in Atlanta.
