Hot Topics From Titans HC Brian Callahan's Sunday Zoom Call

hot-topics-8-10-2025-2

Titans coach Brian Callahan conducted a zoom conference call with reporters on Sunday, one day after the team's preseason opener against the Buccaneers.

The Titans are now in Atlanta, preparing for joint practices against the Falcons this week. The two teams will play a preseason game on Friday night.

Here's a look at some of the hot topics from today's call:

-Callahan said he was pleased with how quarterback Cam Ward played in his two series in the contest.

Ward completed 5-of-8 passes for 67 yards in the game.

"Cam certainly hasn't arrived yet," Callahan said. "We have a lot of things we're still working on. I thought it was a good start for him, encouraging. It was productive, but there's a couple of things we're going to keep grinding on. Still working on getting the ball out fast, still working on the timing of it. … There's plenty of things we're still working on with Cam."

-Running back Tyjae Spears is expected to miss "a couple of weeks at least" with an ankle injury, per Callahan.

"We're kind of waiting on some final word on a few things," Callahan said of Spears. "But he will definitely miss some time."

-Defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat is recovering from a tonsillectomy, and he's expected to return in the not-so-distant future.

"We'll expect Sweat back today or tomorrow," Callahan said. "I don't know that he'll be at practice. We probably need to give that surgery about a week or so because they're back."

-Offensive lineman Blake Hance could potentially return this week in practice, per Callahan.

-Center Lloyd Cushenberry, who remains on the team's Physically Unable to Perform list, could potentially return to practice this week in some capacity, per Callahan, "in a return to play basis." Callahan refrained from giving a timeline on Cushenberry's return, but said the team is encouraged about getting him back and "there's an optimism he's on the right track."

-The status of safety Kevin Winston, who has missed time recently, remains uncertain. "I'm not totally sure one way or the other at this point, how much he'll do in these joint practices."

-Callahan said the timing for cornerback L'Jarius Sneed's return remains unclear. Sneed is also on the team's PUP list. Callahan said he's more optimistic about Cushenberry's return than Sneed's timetable. "But we think he's in a good spot and feel good about where he is at."

-Callahan said he wasn't pleased about giving up 178 rushing yards in the 29-7 loss to the Buccaneers, but the staff has identified some of the mistakes. "We have to get it corrected," Callahan said. "That has to get improved."
