Having Chemisty is Key Between a Quarterback and His Receivers

!
I like what the team has been doing during the first two weeks of the season.  Defensively, the front seven has been executing at a high level and playing as good as any defensive front in the NFL.  They are getting after the quarterback and stopping the run.  The secondary has been pretty consistent as well by not giving up too many big plays.  As a defense, the Titans are one of the top units in the NFL.

Offensively, the run game has been moving the chains.  LenDale White and Chris Brown are both strong runners and the offensive line is creating plenty of holes.  The passing game is a little inconsistent right now and it is probably a combination of getting familiar with one another and the fact the running game is working so well.  I think the receivers will be able to make plays, it is just right now they are not being given as many opportunities because the ground game is picking up first downs and running the clock.

When looking at the passing game you need to keep in mind that the majority of the offensive players are just starting their second year together.  It takes time for a quarterback to get on the same page with his receivers and develop that chemistry.  Steve McNair found it first with Frank Wycheck and then he developed it with Derrick Mason.  After a while, he began to have confidence in myself, Justin McCareins and Drew Bennett.  It takes time to form that relationship. It doesn't happen overnight.

Making plays for a quarterback is one of the best ways to establish that bond.  When I was a young guy, I made a couple of plays here and there, but Steve didn't start looking for me until I did it on a consistent basis.  What gets you a good rapport with a quarterback is constantly getting open, running the proper routes and finishing the big plays.  There are going to be situations in a game when Vince is going to feel comfortable and confident and he is going to be looking for the security of a consistent receiver.  He may make a throw that is not right on target but you have to come down with it for him.  Once that confidence is established, it makes it a lot easier in the pass game.

Everyone talks about the importance of the offseason and training camp - and don't get me wrong, that goes a long way toward being successful on the field - but the quarterback and receiver bond is established when the games count during the regular season.  We are all creatures of habit.  A quarterback is going to rely on the players that he feels most comfortable with.  I can see those relationships starting to form with Vince and his receivers.  Those bonds are going to go a long way in making the Titans' passing game excel.
