NASHVILLE – The Titans face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night at Nissan Stadium.
Here's a look at six things to watch in the contest:
Cam Take 2
Titans quarterback Cam Ward had a great first drive in the preseason opener against the 49ers, but he struggled on the two ensuing drives. When the Titans returned to Nashville, Ward bounced back with a good week of practice, completing 86-of-112 passes (76.7 percent) in the four sessions. After an impressive joint practice on Friday against the Seahawks, Ward and the Titans offense would love to keep the momentum going in the team's second preseason game. Coach Robert Saleh said this week he anticipates the starters playing roughly 20-25 plays, and maybe even until halftime.
Secondary
A lot of the chatter coming out of that 49ers game centered on the secondary, and what some considered a shaky performance in California. Well, the Titans have a chance to change the conversation, at least for a week. The Titans held up pretty well in the joint practice against the Seahawks on Friday, with Alontae Taylor highlighting the work with a Pick 6 in a two-minute period. Some Titans defenders flapped their arms as if they had wings in celebration. But another test will come on Sunday night, even if it's against some back-up Seahawks.
Carnell Tate
Titans receiver Carnell Tate started training camp on fire, making one big catch after the next. But Tate has cooled off in the last week and a half. Tate was held without a catch in the preseason opener, and he didn't have a catch in Friday's practice against Seattle either. The Titans aren't concerned with Tate – the team still thinks he's going to be special in time. But in his Nissan Stadium debut, Tate would love to kickstart his momentum again.
Slye Guy
It wasn't that long ago when the Titans were bringing in kickers for tryouts – back when kicker Joey Slye was slumping. But Slye was a perfect 4-of-4 in the preseason opener vs San Francisco, and he's a perfect 23-of-23 in his last four outings, including joint practices against the 49ers and Seahawks. The Titans want to see Slye continue the accuracy streak as the regular season edges closer.
O-line
The Titans are looking to solidify their starting offensive linemen in the not-so-distant future, and things are starting to come into focus. But there's work to be done, and jelling that needs to be done. The one spot that is still up for grabs is right guard, where Fernando Carmona has moved into the lead in the competiton. The audition for the starting spot will continue on Sunday night on national television.
Bubble Guys
I suspect roughly 48 to 50 players have solidified their spot on the 53-man roster based on what they've done this offseason, in training camp, and where they currently reside in the pecking order at their respective positions. What that means is there are probably three to five spots still up for grabs as we edge closer to final cuts. Injuries, of course, can change things fast. Keep an eye out for big contributors on special teams, and on guys looking to add depth at key spots. Some of these guys are fighting for their roster lives in the preseason.
