NASHVILLE – Can we get a mulligan?
Well, there's no get around the fact Sunday's season opener for the Titans was a real dud.
The team's 23-10 loss to the Jets didn't provide many positives, and instead left fans frustrated and mad.

Question: Hey Jim. The heat I suffered through to watch this game was definitely not worth what I saw on the field. Just a few questions and a statement:
1. How could Slye set the tone with that opening kickoff penalty? Just awful… that can't happen.
2. I thought our D line was supposed to be our strength, why didn't they show up? Not a single sack…?
3. I know the O line didn't help, but why can Cam not hit his wide open receivers? That Tate miss wasn't even close…plus the one hopper screen was just really bad. I'm a Cam supporter but those raised significant questions about if he is really the guy we can pin our hopes on.
When Gray clears, I better see Hill on the field with him. Barton did absolutely nothing in this game.
With a forecast of 95 for next Sunday, think I may need to sell my tickets now. I know it's going to take some time for everything to come together, but I was expecting way better football than that.
Jim: Hey Matt. It was miserably hot, for sure. Heck, my mother-in-law ended up in First Aid at Nissan Stadium and had to leave the game at the start of the third quarter. I told her she was lucky, that she didn't miss anything. And sadly, that's the truth. She's OK, but time will tell if these Titans get better.
Everything you said is true, there is really no defending any of it. I do think the team is better than what it showed on Sunday, but they're going to have to prove it. I understand why fans are losing patience. As for Hill, he's going to be a stud and he's going to play, I can feel certain about that. And, I hate to tell you, but it's looking like it could be even hotter on Sunday.

Question: Well not how I thought it would go. We looked as bad as we have the last two years. Can't block, no pass rush, wasted money in free agency. The DBs didn't cover anyone. Everyone knew the OL was terrible last year, and they did nothing to change anyone's mind. I'm very surprised we didn't even put any pressure on Smith. We made a below average QB look like an all pro. Bad draft, should have picked pass rusher or OL with #4 pick or traded back for more picks. Defense looks lost and offense looked worse. I just wonder what we will do with the #1 pick next year. Very disappointing opening day.

Question: Hi Jim. I write to you a couple of times a year. The first game was obviously frustrating.
My biggest concern is that we have had the worst offensive line for the last 2 seasons. Our first game showed no improvement. Cam Ward needs a chance to be an NFL QB. He is scrambling for his life on the majority of passes. We need to address the offensive line. I like our receivers corps, yet it is hard to get them the ball with the limited amount of time in the pocket for Cam.
I was also disappointed with the punting game. 3 kicks kicked into the end zone for touchbacks. 2 short punts from our defensive end.
I am optimistic about the Saleh era. I am hoping the O Line gets addressed soon.
What are your thoughts about our annual offensive line woes?
Jim: Hey Bob. Not sure what to think of the o-line, at least not yet. I agree Cam was under way too much pressure on Sunday – he was pressured on 21 of his 32 pass attempts, which is ridiculous. The team hasn't been good enough from a personnel standpoint on the o-line the past couple of years, and I acknowledged in here before kickoff on Sunday it's a unit that is going to be heavily scrutinized until it proves to be better. The group didn't exactly quiet the questions after Sunday's performance against the Jets, but I need to see more.

Question: Hi Jim. Another dismal performance! In fact it's actually almost funny how pathetic this team is. All of the hype, all of the new additions, didn't change one thing! Once again we allowed another 3rd rate, subpar QB light up our secondary. Every play appears to be a prevent defense formation. No one wants to play the ball, no wants to turn their head to find the ball. We are experts in allowing a 10 yard cushion to let the receiver catch the ball. Why is Cristian Gonzalez the best DB? What does he do different that we can't do? Simple...HE TURNS AROUND TO PLAY THE BALL!! If our DB'S can do that maybe they will get $135 million.
Don't get me started on the offense. Nothing works!! Nothing!! We can't score! We are officially the worst team in the NFL. AGAIN!!! There goes another season! Can we re-sign Will Levis?
So tired of this!!!
Jim: Hey Greg. Well, there's nothing funny about it, not to anyone who coaches or plays for the team, works for the team, or is a loyal, diehard fan of the team. I agree the Titans probably turned in the worst performance of Week 1 (the Broncos also looked really bad Monday night), but one week doesn't make a season. I remember seeing the 2021 Titans get boat-raced by the Cardinals at home in Week 1, and that team ended up at the AFC's No.1 seed. I remember when the 2014 Titans and 2015 Titans won their season openers at Kansas City and Tampa Bay, respectively, and those teams finished 2-14 and 3-13. Let's watch some football before drawing final conclusions.

Question: Hey Jim, well not even sure if the ink is dry on the box score for this game, but I assume your inbox counter is ringing ups more points than the titans put up Sunday, and face it that was just plain awful to watch.
The titans were simply bad across the board in every phase of football, and saying bad is probably being generous.
New coaches, new players, new logo and same lousy results.
That looked more like a week 4 preseason game than a season opener at home, oh yeah we don't have 4 preseason games any more, maybe the team didn't get that memo ?
This team simply looked unprepared, outcoached and out played.
I know its only week 1, but for fans of this team who have stuck around year after year, this story is getting old.
Jim: You're right on the inbox filling up – they were still rolling in when I posted this. I said in my Six Things That Stood Out the fans deserve better than what they've had to endure the last few years. Sadly, it's true.

Question: Hi Jim. At first I was going to voice the frustrations I have following the disappointing loss to the Jets, but Im sure the mailbag will be full of that without me adding to it.
I just want to ask a couple questions and would appreciate you taking the time to answer them...
1. Cam Ward by his own admission played poorly and despite being constantly pressured missed badly on some very easy throws .. Cam has been consistently inconsistent going back to last year.... how long until he becomes the QB that the team is hoping him to be as number one pick. .
2. Do you, based on your experience as a a Senior writer /editor (one of the best in the NFL) in my opinion still remain optimistic after the first game's overall poor performance in all 3 phases of the game?
3. Do you think that this team even has a slim chance of coming close to being competitive against the Eagles next week? If Cam starts out slow again why not let his backup take over...maybe it will provide the spark the offense needs...

Jim: Hey Bob. On Cam, it's hard for me to predict when he's going to clear that hurdle, assuming he does one day. I like Cam's makeup, from his work ethic to his attitude. But, clearly, he's going to have to settle in and be more dependable and consistent.
I never give predictions, and always temper my expectations for the team in here. At some point this offseason I said I thought the team would double its win total from a year ago, which would be six wins, and I'm not abandoning that thought yet. Obviously, the team needs to play a lot better. Heck, if the Titans play like they did on Sunday, this team will finish 0-17. But again, I think this group is better than what it showed.
Will these Titans be competitive against the Eagles? I'm expecting a much better performance on Sunday, but must admit I was surprised with how poorly things went against the Jets, that's just me being honest.

Question: Titans fans showed up and risked a heatstroke and the reward was that uninspiring performance by all three facets of our team. Aside from Anthony Hill Jr., I just can't find anything positive as I reflect on what I just watched. I understand the "plan" to rotate the defense, but seemed like Big Jeff was on the sidelines way too much while the Jets were content to run it down our throats. Besides feeling great about Hill Jr's promise, the only thing I brought home from that game worth anything is a CJ2K pin (prayers up for this Titans legend and his family). Help me out Jim, tell me something positive that I'm not seeing. #notagainthisyear. Ugh

Question: Same old tale of woe. That showing was on brand for the Titans. O-line stinks, Cam stinks, Daboll stinks. I didn't expect much coming into this season but holy crap! The most productive receiver in their starting quarterback's career is on the practice squad, not allowed to play. What the writer of this letter hoped had been an off season of positive change appears to be just another episode of the "clown show". So many clowns and not one circus tent in sight!

Question: No question. Just thoughts.
Been a fan since '79 and season ticket holder since '99.
Six things that stood out:
1. We suck
2. We've sucked for a long time
3. Spears is not an NFL caliber player. My grandmother could tackle him by poking him with her finger and she's been passed a long time. (Please stop defending him with how "explosive" he is in practice, they don't hit in practice)
4. The Jets, as well as every other team, dominates the line of scrimmage. Our OL couldn't pass or run block my grandmother- see above.
5. No one on our OL would start for any other team, including college or high school. Yet, we refuse to address it.
6. Maybe Spears could play OL and get blown up by a DL instead of a CB on a blitz.
Jim: Two of the six on Tyjae Spears, and two on sucking? C'mon, Heavy C, you can do better than this. Tyjae carried the ball just three times, and while he had a terrible drop, he was hardly that big of a problem.

Question: Can you provide any insight on why the game plan for Sunday's game did not include establishing the run? I mean, really getting the run game going.
Cam had some misses, but I feel like he made good decisions and did what he could with the protection he had, but a run game would help him immensely. You know, take the pressure off, keep the defense honest, make play action mean something. Just the traditional thinking here.
It just didn't look like establishing the run was a part of the game plan. Or maybe it was but it was abandoned way too soon.
Jim: Hey Will. The team didn't have a lot of success running the ball early, and then pretty much had to abandon it after falling behind (Tony Pollard and Spears combined for just 11 carries in the game). I do think the offense will make more of an effort to run it moving forward. I agree that it needs to do so.

Question: Hey Jim, frustrating start to season but my question is we heard all summer long how we preformed better in joint practices against some teams that should be better than the Jets so why is it the only drives that looked half way decent were when the game was out of hand and the jets weren't playing as hard. Does this not give credence to those Cam is a bust critics thanks.
Jim: Cam was good in joint practices against the Seahawks and Bears, but you're right, that didn't play out on Sunday. But again, I'm not making any definitive statements at this point, after one game. I need to see more.

Question: Jim it started out as a good Sunday, with the Longhorns Saturday night thriller win!! Then the Titans took the field and the offense looks lethargic, the defense looks so sloppy! It's not even being out played, they were out coached. Hall walking in the end zone in the 3rd qtr and the Titans having to many men in the field, Cam just giving up on a play and ran out of bounds.. this is gonna be a long, painful, irritating season… have a great week and let's see if this gets better when the Eagles come to Nashville.. as always TITAN UP!

Question: Hey Jim, I'm sure it is going to be a rough week in the mailbag so I thought I'd try to sprinkle in a little sunshine. I am a diehard Titans fan and like many others I was hoping for a more competitive look in week 1. But the reality is that we have new starters and new backups all over the roster. We have new coaches in almost every spot and a new scheme on both sides of the ball. I am hoping that we look much more like a team that no one wants to play by weeks 4-6. Will our chances of making the playoffs be dashed this year if it takes that long? Probably. But I just have to believe that it takes any human a little while to learn a new job in a new system. When our boys are clicking in a few weeks, the games will be much more fun to watch! I'd rather be thinking about playoff matchups than draft picks toward the end of the season, but maybe this is a season for measured progress as we move in that direction. Who knows, maybe the wins will start coming in piles when the new scheme feels more natural. We are all going to have to tune in to find out. In the meantime - -Titan Up!

Question: Hey Jim, I would ask how you're doing but I'm sure it's like the rest of us...lost!! I don't have a question just wanted to vent, so I woke up at 7am got my throwback CJ2k jersey out of the closet loaded up and made the 2.5 hour drive, paid a ridiculous amount to park, walked about a mile, fought through the crowd, talked crap to Jets fans and made my way to my seat (club level might I add) plus battled the 100 degree weather. Only for a professional NFL kicker on the first play of the season to kick the damn ball out of bounds, the game was over from there. Months of waiting, new brand and logo all new coaches, tons of new players but still the same ol Titans!!!! Not giving up on them but that was my last game at Nissan Stadium and yes it's going to suck seeing all the visiting teams fans take over the stadium for the rest of the season but can anybody really expect us to pay for that kind of performance. 2. In the 2025 NFL draft, instead of the "Goldmine," I think we got the "(Cam) Shaft!"

Question: Man I understand its week 1 but Dab's needs to open up the playbook man Pollard having 7 rushing attempts, 3 man route concepts, the lack of motion, it's clear Cam works best when the pocket is moved so why in the world are we not using the o-line and shifting the pocket! No attempt to set up hard play action it actually baffles me watching other play callers today and how they are scheming people open on simple concepts but we can't do any of that! Then theres the d-line we have d-ends shooting 15 yards upfield JFM was a ghost Jeff was getting double teamed he needs to win those 1 in 1's and then Jermaine man I don't even know if he had a pressure! Our best d lineman today was Femi props to him for stepping up he looked good it just hurts my head watching constant blown coverages on 4 man rushes and Saleh not scheming up pressure to get the Jets behind schedule. Obviously there is so many things that the fanbase can be upset about but the thing I hate most is Brian Daboll getting out coached by 65 year old Frank Reich, genuinely baffling. Forever a Titan but we gotta start being aggressive in all phases including the front office.

Question: Hello Jim. I'm not going to belabor you with a long commentary. I don't know enough Xs and Os to offer a remedy and I'm not going to use you as a punching bag. Nonetheless, this I do know:: the Titans are a bad team--and they aren't worth the headache I get from watching them.
If that makes me a fair weather fan, so be it...because it's not that they lost, it's the way they lost that is so demoralizing.
The bottom line--this isn't fun anymore. I'd rather fill the dishwasher and clean out my fridge than watch the Titans.
If they start playing competitively, I'll watch them and wish them well, but I don't think I'll ever jump back on the bandwagon again. There are just too many other things I could be doing --and even more things than I should be doing.
Jim: Hi Pam. I know this team has plenty of ride-or-die fans who will be with the team no matter what. I also have zero doubt that fans who are jumping off the bandwagon now will jump right back back on when the team starts winning consistently again. The only question I have is: When will the team start winning consistently again?

But after this performance I think a lot of us need some words of encouragement. This was All Talk, no Gas. Please let's not pretend like the Jets are by any means a good football team. This was the lowest hanging fruit we could get for week one. But we didn't look like pros out their, let's be honest. Apart from Anthony Hill, this was embarrassing. And you know what, I don't want to feel embarrassed, when I'm wearing my Titans gear at work. I'm not asking for a Super Bowl or the play-offs, I'm just asking for a team performance I can be proud of, that looks like they know what they are doing. When will we get this bare minimum? I'm not sure I'm calming fans down, but I'm being as honest as I can while trying not to put my job in jeopardy. And no, I don't think the Jets are on the verge of going from worst to first. This was on the Titans.

Question: Howdy Jim, I usually wait a few weeks before writing to you, but I can't wait this year. I watched the Titans /Jets and was totally disgusted. The Titans spent big in free agency especially on defense and actually got worse. We heard don't worry everything during preseason is vanilla you will see the real stuff when the season opens. Well what I saw was event worse than the last few years. An offense that can't block a quarterback running for his life even when he doesn't need to. Cam Ward is looking like he is panicked behind his offensive line. The vaunted defense can't stop anyone or even get close to a sack. I watched the games of the next 5 Titans opponents, the Titans are going to get their butt's kicked. The Eagles have Barkley who run through them like a knife through butter, the Giants who looked like a playoff team already, the Ravens (enough Said) then the Colts( maybe a chance). The coaches say we will continue to improve as the season progresses. The other teams will also and they are already way better than the Titans. well another long season ahead and another top draft pick in the future. Let's hope the Titans will do a better job of spending cap money next year. Thanks Jim

Question: Que tal Jim antes que nada me da mucho poderte saludar por este medio. Ya ten�a tiempo de escribirte y ahora lo hago con una profunda frustracion, coraje, impotencia otra vez al ver jugar su primer juego de mis Titans, al parecer va a hacer una temporada muy pero muy larga y tendremos que aguantar ver juegos como el de hoy contra los jets, porque nos ganaron y aparte nos exhibieron en cada area y en ambos lados del balon. Solo el coach Saleh y sus coordinadores ofensivos pensaron que ten�amos una l�nea ofensiva para competir, cuando en realidad tenemos una pesima linea, me duele mucho lo que voy a decir y en verdad espero equivocarme Cam Ward no es el QB que nos llevara al siguiente nivel es muy erratico. La defensa del coach Saleh fue borrada por completo nunca pudo parar el ataque terrestre de los jets. Donde estuvieron Johnson JR, JFM, Oladejo. Nos urge restructurar los CB y safeties. Ahora no pude estar en Nashville apoyando y alentando a mi equipo pero lo estar� haciendo desde Cincinatti y espero que desde ma�ana lunes haya cambios drasticos en el equipo y cuales seran esos cambios? En mi opinion sentar al left tackle Moore JR y otros cambios similares. Tambi�n quiero hacer la observacion de lo que es un excelente OC en el la figura del coach Frank Reich una vez m�s nos vuelve a ganar y de que manera.

Question: WOW! What a miserable start to the season. That was tough to watch. The offense didn't even give the defense a chance to rest. They couldn't stay on the field. 11 first downs and 4 for 12 on third down and 21 minutes possession. You are not going to win any games with that stat line.
Jim, is Cam Ward an NFL Quarterback? I am not so sure. I hope I am wrong but I see no consistency, I see no poise and I think he lacks high level QB IQ that would make him a bonified starter in the NFL. I know its only the first game and we shouldn't run for the cliff just yet but that game was a miserable and concerning home opener. Hearing the fans boo had to be concerning for the coaching staff.

Question: Hey Jim. As I fan since 1992 I'm not sure how much lower we can go to the point we are now getting blown out by the jets at home to make it 6 openers in a row in the losing column.
Last year we saw the bears, patriots, and jags flip it quickly to be back to competitive. We are now 19-50 since 2022, why do you think it is that we are a 6-7 year project when others can figure things out quicker? Knocking on the door to 5 losing seasons in a row with averaging 17 ppg or less across multiple staffs is unacceptable. Why are we so far off?
Jim: Sunday was bad, Chris, there's no way around it. It has been a tough stretch since the middle of the 2022 season, no doubt about it. I am not going to sugar-coat anything after a performance like that. I'll just say, as I've said several times in here before, let's see some more football before making any definitive statements.

Question: Howdy Jim. The Jets taking it to us, the raiders putting up 27 and the cardinals leading the chargers in the 4th could we really end up as 32nd in the national football league. Everyone seems to improve but us, I'm sure we will be sold that it's week 1 just like it was just preseason but that doesn't change the fact that other previous bad teams look more prepared.
Do you think there is urgency or concern getting rocked by the jets? People were booing worse than they booed Todd downing which is tough. Also did Faulk play today?
Jim: Yes, there is urgency and yes, there is concern. As for Faulk, he played 19 snaps.

Question: Hello Jim. I attended the home opener versus the Jets, and it's hard to imagine a worse start. The Titans were outcoached and outplayed in all 3 phases of the game (offense, defense, and special teams). It was extremely hot, and the crowd became frustrated quickly. Worst of all, the team appeared to lack energy. All in all, a butt ugly day. But the good news is that it's only 1 game, and the NFL season is a marathon, not a sprint. How do the Titan leaders (coaches and captains) reset and refocus on playing inspired football? It's been a while since we won an opener, and the schedule is tough early, but I'm hoping this group will be resilient and build a solid foundation for a good season. Best regards, Mike Temple
Jim: We'll find out this Sunday what this team is made of. I really think the Titans will look like a different team against the Eagles. If not, you're going to hear the E-A-G-L-E-S chant a lot on Sunday.
