NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans are supporting Saint Thomas Health's efforts to promote safe sleep to new parents during Baby Safety Month in September.
Titans players Jason McCourty, Coty Sensabaugh, Craig Stevens, Taylor Thompson, Alterraun Verner and Delanie Walker visited Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, welcoming new babies to their families.
Titans owner K. S. "Bud" Adams, Jr. has been a long time financial supporter to Saint Thomas Hospital's Birthing Center through the Titans Foundation.
More than 4,500 infant deaths occur each year due to numerous factors, including accidental suffocation due to unsafe sleep environments that include loose crib blankets. Swaddling infants in a blanket is an age-old practice that can comfort a fussy baby. However, incorrect swaddling can pose a health threat. A blanket that is too loose can unwind and hinder breathing; one that is too tight can cause hip problems. Remember the ABC's of safe sleep -- Infants should sleep Alone, on their Backs, and in a Crib.
Saint Thomas Hospital executives were appreciative of the Titans' visit.
"The players provide a unique experience for our patients while they are in our hospitals and are celebrating a birth with proud parents," said Jeff Cook, Director of Legal and Contracts, Saint Thomas Health.
"It is great to work with the Titans to help provide safe sleep education to our parents and community," said Deborah Bouressa, Director of Women's Health.
Saint Thomas delivers approximately 10,000 newborns each year and educates new parents about safe sleep practices for babies. Their mission is focused on improving the overall health in communities.
