Weekend Mailbag: Jim Wyatt Answers Questions From Titans Fans in Coaching Search's Second Week

mailborgo

NASHVILLE – The second week of the Titans coaching search is nearing a completion.

A week after interviewing seven candidates, another big group visited with team officials this week, many at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park.

More will be coming in over the weekend.

So, is a new hiring imminent?

Well, we're getting closer. It could be in the coming week.

While we wait, let's dive into another batch of questions/comments …

Here's the link to submit questions: CLICK HERE.

Eric Biederman from Franklin, Tennessee
Question: With John Harbaugh now off the board, who do you see as the most convincing HC candidates? I would be alright with Steve Spagnuolo, McDaniel, Stefanski, and a few others, but some of the people we're interviewing are really making me scratch my head. Raheem Morris? Jason Garrett? What is the point of interviewing these people? Raheem Morris has given me absolutely zero reason to think he should coach any franchise. I think hiring either one of them or Nagy or something would absolutely ruin our future with Cam and our young core. Sorry for the rant.

Jim: Hey Eric. I know Harbaugh was considered the biggest fish by most, and I'm certainly not going to throw any shade his way – he's proven to be a really good coach, and leader of a football team. But there are a lot of good, potentially better, options out there. Time will tell us who was the right guy in this coaching cycle. I hesitate to name my "most convincing" just because it might differ from what the folks actually doing the interviewing might say, and, they're a lot more invested/involved in this process than I am. I will say I'm not going to criticize them for interviewing too many people. I think the process has been incredibly thorough, and I trust GM Mike Borgonzi & Co. will get it right.

Steve Crosio from Toms River, New Jersey
Question: Hey there Jim, now that the John Harbaugh drama is over since he chose New York Giants, (my) Top 5 candidates for Tennessee Titans' Head Coach:

1. Robert Saleh
2. Mike McCarthy
3. Kevin Stefanski
4. Mike McDaniel
5. Matt Nagy

Jim: Thanks for chiming in, Steve.

Riley Grubbs from Springfield, Tennessee
Question: Hi Jim! What position do you think they will target first come free agency, obviously we are lacking star power at the WR and edge positions, but the churning of the secondary became a huge problem at the end of the season.

Jim: Edge rusher, cornerback, receiver. And more.

Ozzie Wiese from Fort Mill, South Carolina
Question: Could you tell me if the Titans are keeping there "Special Teams" couch for next year?

Jim: Hi Ozzie. Well, I sure hope so. John Fassel changed the culture and the results on special teams in 2025. We're not going to know for certain on this until a new head coach is hired. The new coach may have someone else in mind for special teams, but I feel certain the folks in the building will vouch for John.

Mike Tate from Chattanooga, Tennessee
Question: What's up Jim? Long time no write in, but I was always told that if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all! Man was that a rough season and I'm glad it's over but looking to the future I would love to see McDaniel and Kingsbury on the same staff it would be like a Cam Ward cheat code. Then add Bain in the 1st, McAlster from TCU with the 2nd and an A.J. Brown reunion and that would be a good start to getting W's again. What's your thoughts Jim?

Jim: Hey Mike. Interesting thoughts. Don't be a stranger. I've always liked A.J., but not sure I can see a return happening, tbh.

Tom Meyer from San Antonio, Texas
Question: Howdy Jim, been a while since I last wrote you. I need to put my 2 cents in on the Titans coaching hire, Please Titans do not hire Matt Nagy as the head coach. I just don't believe he is the best choice available. We have seen how the good ole buddy system has worked in the past, Please start with the best hire available and try to go younger with the hire.

Jim: Appreciate you weighing in, Tom. Not sure how this is going to play out. But if the Titans end up with Nagy, and again that's an if, it won't be because he's "buddies" with Borgonzi, I can promise you that.

William Swatzell from Russellville, Kentucky
Question: Any chance the Titans would consider Mike Tomlin now that he's available???😉🏈👌

Jim: Hey William. It doesn't sound like Tomlin is really "available." And, from afar, it also sounds like he doesn't plan to coach in 2026.

Brandon Russell from LaVergne, Tennessee
Question: Hey Jim, I've been a Titans fan ever since I could remember and I've been cheering for them through the highs and the lows. I'm wondering what the Titans are going to do with Will Levis, L'Jarius Sneed, Calvin Ridley, Joey Slye, Arden key, Johnny Hekker, Xavier woods, and Kevin Zeitler this offseason because to me all of those guys were rather unproductive, Injured, have a contract expiring, or are just getting old and in some cases it's all 4 of those cases. There is a couple of other names on the Titans roster that can definitely be added to that list but those are the main ones I could think of. There are plenty of good options out there in free agency and in the upcoming draft that can replace these guys and fill in those roles and be productive. The Titans have a lot of cap space for free agency and good draft capital that could get better with some trades and it gives us a lot of resources to work with. The Titans also had talented rookies this season like Dike, Ward, Helm and Ayomanor as well as talented vets that will return like Jeffery Simmons and Tony Pollard. Most of the decisions on who will stay on the roster and who will leave probably won't be even considered of until we find a head coach. I like most of the coaches the Titans have interviewed so far and I would be extremely happy if we could get a coach with a couple of seasons of head coaching experience and has won a Super Bowl(as a coordinator or head coach) that's my head coaching criteria for the Titans. I'm very fond of the Kansas City Chiefs so my top options would be Steve Spagnuolo or Matt Nagy but other coaches that meet my criteria would be John Harbaugh, Mike McCarthy, Mike Tomlin, Raheem Morris, and Kliff Kingsbury. There might be more coaches out there who meet this criteria but those were the ones I could think of. regardless of who the next coach will be I believe the Titans are due for an amazing season in 2026 and it can be a foundation for the years to come. TITAN UP!!!!

Jim: Hey Brandon. Well, some of those guys won't be back. Exactly which ones, well, some of it might depend on who is ultimately hired as the team's next head coach, as you mentioned. But I'm sure the GM and personnel staff have their feelings about some of these guys. Thanks for chiming in.

Frank Huerta from Kyle, Texas
Question: This is more of an opinion. We all know the saying that everybody has one, huh. Well, ì say first for the team go home, recover, spend time with family and get ready for a new season. Next find a coach I think one who has had coaching experience everybody (said) Harbaugh. But I ĺike Garrett, Stefanski, Arthur Smith Pete Carroll heck why not Jon Gruden? Next up the draft 1st offense wide receivers defense need some defensive backs too cover the pass and o line no more sacks Cam had enough this season. After that a good training camp and on to a Superbowl, Let's Go Titans we got this.

Jim: I hear ya, Frank. Things are moving around here.

Richard Robles from Springfield, Tennessee
Question: Hi, Jim. If there's an NFL Draft, I say keep the pick and draft the Kicker in the 1st Round of the NFL Draft. Thank you, Titan Up!

Jim: Hey Richard. There will be a draft, and the Titans will not draft a kicker in the first round. If that happens, I'll throw all my visors and pencils away.

Have a great weekend everyone!
