Tracking Top Defensive Performances at Combine

Defensive players took their turns on Monday and Tuesday at showing scouts what they can do on the field at this year's NFL Scouting Combine.

A group of 60 safeties and defensive backs concluded the annual event in Indianapolis Tuesday with a series of drills designed to provide metrics for NFL personnel departments. Scouts will use the information gathered at the combine and at a series of pro days scattered around college campuses to help guide executives' decisions in the 2013 NFL Draft (April 25-27).

NFL.com has a full results tracker that is sortable by day of workout, position, last name, school name and result.

Mississippi State's Darius Slay recorded the fastest official time of any defensive player in the 40-yard dash. Slay had a time of 4.36 seconds, edging Alabama DB Dee Milliner, a projected first-rounder, by one-hundredth of a second. Neither Slay nor Milliner was able to challenge the combine record of 4.24 set by Titans running back Chris Johnson in 2008.

Syracuse's Shamarko Thomas turned in the top 40-yard dash, the top bench press and tied for the best vertical jump of any safety on Tuesday. The performance came one day after LSU's Barkevious Mingo recorded either the best or second best performance of any defensive lineman in the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump, the broad jump and the three-cone drill.

SMU's Margus Hunt and Missouri Southern State's Brandon Williams each did 38 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press on Monday. Those were the highest tallies of anyone at this year's combine.

No one who competed Tuesday came close to the combine broad jump record of 139 inches set Monday by Southern Mississippi linebacker Jamie Collins, who also led all defensive players this year with a vertical leap of 41.5 inches.

Here's a look at the top two performers at each position group in five drills from Monday and Tuesday:
