TITANS LOOK TO REBOUND ON SHORT WEEK
The Titans played their home opener last Sunday against another AFC South foe, the Indianapolis Colts. The Titans held the lead going into the fourth quarter, but a four-yard touchdown pass from Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett to receiver T.Y. Hilton with less than five minutes remaining in regulation was enough to give Indianapolis a 19-17 win. The Titans' last-minute drive stalled with a fourth-down incompletion from the Indianapolis 45-yard line.
The two Tennessee touchdowns came on a one-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Mariota to offensive lineman David Quessenberry and a one-yard touchdown run by running back Derrick Henry. Henry scored his NFL-high 11th total touchdown (10 rushing) in a seven-game span, dating back to the end of the 2018 campaign.
The Titans defense forced two turnovers, recorded a pair of sacks and limited the Colts to 121 net passing yards, the fewest by a Titans opponent since the Buffalo Bills (79) on Oct. 7, 2018.
Cornerback Logan Ryan tallied his second interception in as many weeks. It was the third time in his seven-year career with interceptions in consecutive games.
Through two weeks, the Titans defense is allowing 317.0 total yards per game to rank 10th in the NFL. The Titans are second in passing defense, allowing 182.5 yards per contest.
THE JAGUARS
The Jaguars are in their third full season under head coach Doug Marrone, who led the team to a division title in 2017. Jacksonville's record in 2018 was 5-11.
Last week the Jaguars traveled to Houston and fell by a final score of 13-12. Rookie quarterback Gardner Minshewthrew a touchdown pass to receiver DJ Chark Jr. in the final minute of the fourth quarter to cut the Texans' lead to one point. Rather than kicking an extra point, the Jaguars opted for a two-point conversion attempt, but running back Leonard Fournette was stopped short of the goal line by Houston's defense.
Minshew registered his first career start at quarterback last week after veteran Nick Foles was placed on injured reserve. A sixth-round draft choice from Washington State, Minshew passed for 213 yards and a touchdown and added 56 rushing yards against the Texans.
The Jaguars return most of the defensive starters in 2019 that made it the NFL's fifth-ranked unit a year ago. Led by Pro Bowl cornerback and Middle Tennessee native Jalen Ramsey, the Jaguars ranked second in the league in passing defense in 2018.
Titans running back Derrick Henry carries 17 times for a franchise-record 238 yards and four touchdowns in Tennessee's 30-9 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football in 2018.
