Observations From Titans Practice on Friday, When WR James Proche II Continued His Momentum

NASHVILLE – The Titans took the field on Friday for their sixth open practice of training camp.

Here's a look at what stood out:

-The Titans practiced in pads for the third day in a row.

-Receiver James Proche II has been one of the bright spots in recent practices, and that included Friday's session. Proche made a team-high five catches on Friday, including a deep ball catch on a ball thrown by quarterback Brandon Allen. Proche also made an early grab on a ball thrown by quarterback Cam Ward. He was praised by coaches for running a great route on another rep. I have Proche with eight catches over the last two practices, and with 12 in the six open practices so far. I'm beginning to think he could be a roster contender.

-After early individual drills and then 1-on-1s, the Titans worked only in team periods, including a two-minute period to close out practice.

-Quarterback Cam Ward was mostly sharp, completing 10-of-14 in the practice session. Ward went 4-of-4 in the first team "base downs" period, and 3-of-4 in a third down period that followed. But Ward was picked off to end the two-minute drill, after having a couple of balls batted down at the line of scrimmage in the same period. One play before the pick, Ward had thrown a beautiful, low sidearm pass to receiver Van Jefferson in a place where defenders couldn't get to it. Ward threw darts to Tyler Lockett and Chimere Dike in the third down period.

-It was cornerback Roger McCreary who intercepted Ward. McCreary stepped in front of Lockett for the turnover. It was McCreary's second pick of Ward in as many days. McCreary is having a nice camp.

-Tight end Josh Whyle had a pair of catches late, including a nice grab on an Allen throw in the two-minute period. After a quiet start to camp, I've been noticing Whyle more in recent days.

-Receiver Xavier Restrepo made four catches on Friday, while receiver Jha'Quan Jackson had three.

-Jackson got poked in the eye after one of his catches, but appeared to be OK.

-QB Brandon Allen was 9-of-12 in the three team periods, including going 4-of-6 in the two-minute period.

-QB Tim Boyle went 8-of-10 on the day, but he also threw a pick in the two-minute period.

-Tight end Chig Okonkwo made a one-handed catch when he pinned the football against his shoulder pads.

-Edge Arden Key batted down one of Ward's passes.

-Defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons batted down another one of Ward's throws.

-It was cornerback Amani Oruwariye who picked off Boyle.

-Cornerback Gabe Jeudy-Lally broke up an Allen pass intended for Bryce Oliver deep sideline.

-Cornerback Jermari Harris had a nice PBU himself.

-In the early 1-on-1 period, tight end David Martin-Robinson got open for a deep ball, and made a fantastic catch.

-I keep noticing running back Tyjae Spears looking faster. Spears added a nice stutter-step on one sideline run.

-Receiver Van Jefferson made a great catch on a back shoulder throw by Ward, catching the ball despite Jarvis Brownlee Jr. being all over him.

-Edge Femi Oladejo would've crushed Ward in a game on the next play, but he had to hold up in practice.

-Cornerback Marcus Harris made a nice break-up.

-Safety Mike Brown was right there on an Allen completion to Jackson across the middle.

-Kicker Joey Slye did not kick in Friday's session. Slye is 20-of-21 in camp.

-Receiver Calvin Ridley was given the day off for rest, per head coach Brian Callahan. Ridley was suffering from cramps in Wednesday's session, and isn't dealing with an injury, per Callahan. Ridley came out and watched practice in shorts and a t-shirt.

-Defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat is day-to-day with an abdominal issue, and did not practice Friday.

-Guard Peter Skoronski left practice a little early with a trainer, but indicated afterward he's OK.

-Offensive lineman Blake Hance (calf) did not practice.

-Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed and center Lloyd Cushenberry began training camp on the team's Physically Unable to Perform list and they're not practicing.

-Former Titans punter Brett Kern attended Friday's session with his son, Bryce.

-SiriusXM's Brad Hopkins and Charles Davis broadcasted from training camp on Friday. The show will air from 4-6 CT on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Next open practice: Saturday, 8 a.m.
