Jets QB Geno Smith: Titans Defense is "Very Physical and Fast"

JETS QB GENO SMITH

(on his impressions of the Titans' cornerbacks)

I'm impressed with their corners. They have guys that can run, who get physical at the line. Those guys at the backend as far as the safeties go, they do a great job of communicating with the corners. They're rarely out of position, and they make it hard on you. So, it's going to pose a threat for us, and we've got to continue to prepare for it. I think we'll be ready come game day.

(on the most difficult adjustments from college football to the NFL)

I'd say the most difficult adjustment so far has been not forcing the ball. I'm always an aggressive player. My coaches and teammates encourage that, but there's a time and place for that. There's time when you need to tuck it and run or maybe just throw it away. I need to get better with that, but it's something I can continue to improve.

(on building confidence with the game-winning drive in the season opener)

You know, I don't think it helps my confidence that much. I was always confident. It was just good to get a victory for the team. We all came out and fought that game, but we've moved on from it. We'll try to get another one this Sunday.

(on the Titans' defense this year)

Their defense is very physical and fast. They have linebackers who can run; Akeem Ayers, a few of those guys who run very well. The defensive line is very active. So, they're going to pose a threat for us. In the backend, I think their secondary has a lot of veteran leadership then you have corners that are very physical who can come out and make big plays on the ball. They get up in your face and jam the corner. Guys have to be prepared to make plays down the field.

(on whether it's easier to go on the road for the second time as a starter)

No, I don't think any of them are easy. I think every single game is going to have its own set of obstacles. We just have to continue to prepare for it and prepare our minds and bodies for all the games on the road.

(on the team's success against Buffalo)

I think we just took what the defense gave us. Guys did a phenomenal job of making plays down the field on the ball. The offensive line protected extremely well, so it allowed me to stay comfortable in the pocket and stay upright and step into my throws. I think we did a great job with that and continue to move the ball. I wish we could score more points and get into the red zone more. Overall, it was a decent game.

(on Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill making plays on offense)

Having Ton (Santonio Holmes) back and having Stephen (Hill) out there making plays definitely helped us. As long as we continue to improve on that and just practice it hard and work, we'll get better. It's early in the season, so we've got to stay consistent with that and continue to stay focused and work extremely hard in practice.
