CJ's 4.24 Still Tops List of Titans Combine Performances

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Chris Johnson has the fastest and perhaps most famous performance of any player at an NFL Scouting Combine, but he's not the only member of the Titans who has performed well in recent years.

Johnson clocked a record of 4.24 seconds in the 40-yard dash in 2008. The sprint has been commemorated on shoes and still stands as the top mark, although Bills receiver Marquise Goodwin came close last year with a 4.27.

Chris Johnson set the NFL Scouting Combine record in the 40-yard dash by running it in 4.24 seconds in 2008.

The 40-yard dash is one of the timing and testing drills in which more than 330 prospects who have been invited to Indianapolis can participate at Lucas Oil Stadium Feb. 22-25. The event also includes player interviews with members of the NFL clubs, medical examinations and media sessions that will begin Thursday.

Justin Hunter, Zaviar Gooden, Coty Sensabaugh and Mike Martin delivered top overall performances at the past two combines, and multiple players performed well among their position groups. The Titans selected Hunter and Gooden in 2013 and Sensabaugh and Martin in 2012 just two months after their respective performances.

Blake Beddingfield, Titans director of college scouting, said players at the "skill positions" generally benefit more from the timing and testing events.

"Not many people want to see an offensive lineman run, maybe lift and do some things like that, but you can actually get a good idea of physical attributes of an offensive lineman: quick feet, athleticism, jumping and running and doing those kinds of things," Beddingfield said.

Team executives, coaches and scouting departments have the benefit of gauging each participant's performance in a controlled environment.

"You always estimate going into the fall what a player may run, what his speed is, and now we're going to find out. He's going to be on a clock, in an arena," Beddingfield said. "They're all going to run on the same surface. It's about as ideal as you can get. It should be as fast as they're ever going to be on this surface when it comes to football, so it's a good opportunity to see them."

Although Johnson is most known for the 40 time, he also ranked seventh overall and third among running backs in 2008 in the broad jump (10-feet, 10-inches), and his 35-inch mark in the vertical jump ranked fourth among running backs that year.

Here's a look at notable performances (categorized by year, since 2006) of players who finished the 2013 season on the Titans roster:
